Reno Riverwalk Merchants Association, a coalition of more than 45 businesses located along the Riverwalk in downtown Reno, last week launched a fundraising campaign to spruce up the downtown area.

Matt Polley, Riverwalk Merchants Association president and owner of Java Jungle in downtown Reno, said the association recognizes that the financially pressed city government can't pay for downtown beautification.

Among the work that needs to completed, he said, is replacement of about 400 brightly colored flags throughout the downtown area, replanting of flower baskets in Wingfield Park and care for a weed-infested vegetable garden on West Street.

The association said it will post details of its fundraising effort at www.renoriver.org.
