Ballroom, square dance classes starting

Whether you prefer ballroom or barn, upcoming dance classes can get you in step.

Larry Ward, who has 55 years of experience teaching ballroom dance and square dancing, will teach three dance classes this fall in Carson City and Genoa.

Ward has also been invited do a demonstration on square dancing in October with the Cleveland Symphany Orchestra followed by a guest presentation at Overland College.

A ballroom class will take place from 7:30-9 p.m. Mondays through Dec. 19 at Genoa Town Hall. Open registration continues for the next two classes, Sept. 19, 26. Dances to be covered are the cha-cha, waltz, fox trot, salsa, East Coast swing, American tango and Texas two-step.

A ballroom class also begins 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday and continues Wednesday through Dec. 21 (dark on Oct. 31), with an extended practice session following the lessons from 8:30-9:30 p.m. The classes will take place at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St. Registration continues Sept. 21 and 28.

Cost for either ballroom class is $8 adults and $5 teens for each lesson.

A14-week beginners square dance class is 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesdays, through Dec. 20 (dark on Sept. 20 and Nov. 8) in the Genoa Town Hall. Registration is open for the second class, which is tonight.

The square dance class is $6 adults and $4 for teens ages 13-18, for each lesson.

The last night of each class includes a graduation celebration.

Robey Willis to be honored at evening event

The Ron Wood Family Resource Center will hold its Third Annual Community Leader of the Year Celebration and Benefit from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 17 at Empire Ranch Golf Course.

This year, the center will pay tribute to the Honorable Robey Willis for his years of community service and dedication to the youth and families of the community. The event will feature celebrity servers and auctioneer, wine tasting, hors d'oeurves and music. Tickets are $50 per person.

The event will also be a fundraiser for many services that directly benefit families in need. Donations are being sought for the raffle and auction.

Auditions planned for family show

Auditions for "A Tuna Christmas" are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Brewery Arts Center's Maizie Harris Jesse Theatre.

The musical comedy has 21 parts to fill for actors ages 18-118, according to Maizie Harris Jesse, who will direct the Proscenium Players production.

Douglas County pet vaccination clinic planned

Douglas County Animal Shelter and DAWG are offering free rabies vaccinations for all pets of Douglas County residents 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 17 at Douglas County Animal Shelter.

Pets must be on leash or in carriers. The county and the animal shelter is offering this special service only at this clinic for the community's pets. Pets belonging to non-Douglas County residents cost $15. For further information about this clinic and other services, please contact the animal control staff at 782-9061.

Dr. Lesli Hewitt, DVM of Quail Ridge Animal Hospital and DAWG member, will administer other pet vaccinations for a fee. DAPP (distemper/parvo) for dogs $14, Bordetella (kennel cough) $14, FVRCP for cats $18, Feline leukemia: test $35 , vaccination $15. Canine heartworm test $35.

AVID microchip identification is also available for $30, which includes registration.

United Way to destribute fund to Carson-area organizations

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra announced on Monday its distribution of $429,309 in funding from the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. United Way was selected to distribute the funds by a national board that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, America Red Cross, Council of Jewish Federations, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and United Way of America.

"This supplement to the region is critical during these tough economic times,"said Karen Barsell, chief executive officer and president of UWNNS. "These funds will help many individuals that are in need of basic assistance."

Carson-area organizations that will receive funds are: Food Bank of Northern Nevada, $95,893; Carson Advocates to End Domestic Violence, $20,500; FISH Carson City, $10,465; Douglas County Social Services, $10,726; Carson Valley Food Closet, $10,000; Family Support Council of Douglas County, $10,000; Lyon County Human Services, $15,000; and Storey County Community Chest, $3,250.

The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Progam was created in 1983 to supplement the work of local social service organizations within the United States, both private and governmental, to help people in need of emergency assistance.

Eight local boards within the UWNNS service region determine how to distribute the funds for each jurisdiction. Each board was comprised of volunteers from local organizations representative of the national board as well as private citizens.
