'Be Prepared' event focuses on preparing for uncertain future

The Carson City Nevada Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host "Be Prepared in Carson Area" community event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 8 at the LDS Stake Center at 411 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.

All those living in the greater Carson area - including Tahoe, Dayton, Walker and Carson Valley - are invited to attend to learn how to prepare their home and family for disaster. Those attending the event will learn about the Block Project for this area. This event will be coordinated with local emergency response teams, churches and community outreach service agencies.

Applicants sought to own affordable home

The Carson City Board of Supervisors recently awarded a residential lot in Carson City to the Sierra Nevada Community Land Trust.

This property is adjacent to Mills Park and will be the site of a new affordable home for one eligible family. In order to make this possible, the SNCLT uses grants and donations, combined with $100,000 in funds from the Western Nevada Home Consortium, to subsidize homes for those households making between $30,000 and $60,000 per year.

Monthly payments will be approximately $728, including principal, interest, taxes and insurance, for a three-bedroom, two-bath, two-car-garage home.

All interested families are encouraged to apply.

Sierra Nevada Community Land Trust is a nonprofit organization set up to provide permanent, long-term affordable housing for low- to moderate-income people. Through the use of a 99-year renewable ground lease, the homebuyer purchases only the home and SNCLT maintains ownership of the land in perpetuity. When homebuyers sell their homes, they do so under the ground lease clause which requires them to sell only to other income-qualified individuals and with a limit on the appreciated value of the home.

The third annual Literacy for Life Golf Tournament will be Oct. 14 at Thunder Canyon Golf Course in Washoe Valley.

The Literacy for Life Golf Tournament is a fundraiser to ensure that every Northern Nevada child and adult has the opportunity to learn to read.

Democratic Central Committee features Ron Norton

Ron Norton of Computer Corps will speak to the Carson City Democratic Central Commitee and all other interested Democrats at 7 p.m. Oct.5 in the AFSCME Building, 709 E.Robinson St.

Fall Tree Care Seminar coming in November

For the 20th consecutive year, the Carson City Shade Tree Council will host its annual Fall Tree Care Seminar. The seminar will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Sierra Room at the Community Center, 851 E. William St. It is open to all tree care professionals and tree lovers in the community.

This year's seminar will feature guest speakers Michael Janik, an International Society of Arboriculture-certified arborist who specializes in fruit trees and espaliers, and Rod Haulenbeek of the Nevada Division of Forestry, who will speak on the importance of tree inventories in Nevada.

Tom Henderson and the staff of Healthy Trees will demonstrate practical tree trimming and planting methods. A tree planting demonstration is planned for the morning session.

A presentation on the Carson City Greenhouse Project and a tour of the greenhouse is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon session.

During October, the registration price will be $65. From Nov. 1 until the day of the seminar, the registration price will be $75. Walk-in registration will be accepted. Applications and agendas are available from the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department or at the door. A continental breakfast and hot lunch are included in the registration fee. Continuing education units from the ISA will be available for attendees.

The seminar is the council's primary fund-raising event. It uses the money raised to pay for the trees planted at its annual Arbor Day Celebration and at the seminar. City funds are not used to pay for any council activity.

State nursery in Washoe Valley offers 25-percent-off sale

The Nevada Division of Forestry State Tree Nursery in Washoe Valley is holding a 25-percent-off sale of low-cost, conservation plants.

The nursery will sell its remaining stock at the discounted price Oct. 14 and 15. The nursery is closing for the season Oct. 15 and will re-open May 10.

Fall is an optimum time for planting. Warm soils encourage root growth before the ground freezes. Fall plantings with an already established root system will be more tolerant of the summer heat.

The nursery will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Plants are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For a list of available species, call the nursery at 775-849-0213 or visit http://www.forestry.nv.gov.

Most species are available in D-pots for the sale price of $1.69 or T-pots for $2.63.

The nursery is designed to assist landowners by providing plant material suitable for conservation uses such as, but not limited to, windbreaks, soil erosion control, water conservation and wildlife habitats. Plants purchased at the Washoe Nursery must be used for conservation purposes as provided for by NRS 528.105.

The plants are all grown and maintained at the nursery and are conditioned to survive Northern Nevada's cold winters and hot summers.
