Late-week storm expected to bring snow, plunging temperatures

The winter that barely was isn't done yet.

Two storms are forecast to run through the Sierra and into the Carson City area this week, with an unpredictable amount of snow expected to fall Friday.

"How much is going to accumulate is hard to say because we're still seeing the April sun," said meteorologist Dawn Fishler with the National Weather Service.

The first storm, which was set to hit Tuesday night, was also bringing chances for rain and snow and wind gusts possibly up to 45 mph, Fishler said. The second is expected to follow Thursday and bring with it as much as 3 inches of snow Thursday night, according to the weather service.

In the Sierra, at elevations above 7,000 feet, up to 2 feet of snow could fall, Fishler said.

"The second storm is definitely stronger than the first," Fishler said.

She said the temperatures Friday, right before the storm fizzles out, will be 15 to 20 degrees below average. But Saturday afternoon, the weather should start turning again.

The expected high Sunday is near 62 degrees, and Monday should be a few degrees above average, with an expected high of 67, Fishler said.
