Prep roundup: McGahuey lifts Carson to two wins

Christa McGahuey went 6-for-6 with two home runs and eight RBI as the Carson softball team went 2-0 in Saturday's action at the Reed Easter Invitational in Sparks.

In the second game, Carson pounded out 13 hits in a 10-0 win over Fernley in five innings.

McGahuey tripled home Purcell for her first hit of the game. Rebecka Breuer made it 2-0 with a home run in the second inning. Carson blew the game open with four runs in the fourth, as Emily Collins singled home Erica Watson who ran for Lacey Peternell, who reached base via walk.

Jennifer Purcell followed Collins with a single and they both scored on McGahuey's second homer of the day for a 6-0 lead. In the fifth, McGahuey tripled for the second time of the day scoring Collins, who had doubled in Kandice Tuttle who had tripled to lead off the inning. Morrow drove in McGahuey for the 10-0 lead.

Lindsey Ashbaugh gave up four hits in picking up the win for the Senators.

In the opener, Carson beat the Reed JV team 10-2. After giving up a first inning run to the Reed JV team, Carson marched back with three in the bottom.

Collins singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. She scored on Purcell's single. Purcell was caught stealing, however McGahuey walked and scored on Danielle Morrow's triple. Morrow scored on Ashbaugh's double to give Carson a 3-1 lead.

An inning later, Carson broke the game open. Carson had two hits and a walk but took advantage of an error to push the lead to 6-1. McGahuey then nailed a 2-run homer to push the lead to 8-1. Another error pushed the final run of the inning across.

McGahuey pitched five innings allowing two hits and striking out eight.

Carson, 14-7, hosts Wooster at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

Saarem leads track team

The Carson High track team took a few individuals to the Rocklin Invitational on Saturday.

Maddie Saarem had Carson's best showing on the day, a third place in the pole vault. She cleared 10 feet 6 inches. Douglas' Amanda Brazeau was second at a 11 feet.

Elena Thurman was 19th in the 100 meter dash at 13.27; she finished 16th in the triple jump, jumping 29 feet 8 inches. Sabrina Ronato was 39th in the 200 meter dash at 30.91; Erika Valenzuela was ninth in the discus at 97 feet; Ali Fleming was 12th in the discus at 94 feet 4 inches; Tiana McAllister-Daggs was 18th at 88 feet.

In the shot put Makayla Ragnone was 11th at 31 feet 5 inches, her teammate Ali Fleming was 12th at 31 feet 4.5 inches. Courtney Hack was 19th at 29 feet 5 inches.

On the boys side, Nathan Hazard was fifth at 146 feet 8 inches in the discus. Patrick Cooke was 17th throwing 126 feet 8 inches. Tommy Champion was 48th in the 100 meter dash at 12.06 and in the long jump at just over 16 feet.
