Two decades long quest brings in 'Les Miserables'

After two decades of trying, the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Co. secured the rights to perform "Les Miserables" next year.

Stephanie Arrigotti, Western Nevada College music professor and the theatre company artistic director, said the show would replace the previously-slated "Fiddler on the Roof" on the 2013 season's bill of fare.

Staging of "Les Miserables" will come in November, with any tickets already purchased for Fiddler honored as replacement passes or with refunds provided should that that be the preference.

"Les Miserables" will play at the Carson City Community Center in nine performances on weekends from Nov. 9-24, 2013. Purchase of tickets for it or for the two-show season, beginning in May, were urged by the company in the announcement because high demand is anticipated.

The season opens with "Oliver!" and that show runs weekends May 10-19, also at the community center.

The announcement also reminded people who enjoy musical theatrical performances, and know others who do also, that season tickets for both shows would make great holiday gifts.

Purchasing season tickets for both will save $1 for each show, costing $54. Tickets are available through the website www.wnmtc.com or by calling (775) 445-4249.

"Les Mis is reputed to be the longest-running musical in the world," according to Arrigotti, "and for good reason."

She said it involves the inspiring message of a thief who turns into a saint, is animated by a stirring and fervent score, and has exhilarated countless audiences.

The show, which will be accompanied by a large and professional orchestra, will afford Carson City musical theater patrons a chance to see a show that won eight Tony Awards and many other honors.

"If you haven't bought tickets yet, we urge you to do so quickly as they will be in high demand," according to Arrigotti. "All seating is reserved, so the earlier you buy the better your seat."
