A reminder to cherish children

I got delayed in writing the column this week with finals coming up, winter break ahead, and the CHS We the People Competition this weekend. So I sit here Friday evening doing what should have been done yesterday.

Unfortunately tonight, writing a column is lost on me as I sit with a heavy heart watching the tragic news unfold on the television of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. What seems like a nightmare is reality and it's unspeakable on every level. Schools are supposed to be safe.

There is never a reason to hurt a child, and today the world suffers the loss of 20 young children. The idea does not escape me that among those children could have been future doctors, lawyers, athletes, mothers, fathers, teachers or even maybe a future president of our country. Today also serves as a reminder to me that life is precious, and we never know what's going to happen tomorrow.

So I write this article every week celebrating all the good that happens on our campus and within our community. There is good in our world, but tonight, I am reminded that a school in Connecticut is living the worst possible nightmare imaginable. As soon as I finish this column tonight, I am going to grab my own children and hug them as tight as I can.

Please do the same with your children.

STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT

As winter break comes ever nearer, Carson High School sudents are anxiously awaiting a nice break. On Wednesday, is tacky holiday sweater day where students, who have a cool, or funny looking holiday sweater, can wear it with pride.

Both our boys and girls basketball teams will be at home on Dec. 20, going against Damonte Ranch High School. Bring out the blue and white for the last home game before break.

CHS GIVES BACK

Multiple clubs, athletic teams, classes, and staff participated in an Angel Tree program this week, gathering gifts and donations for families in our community for the Christmas holiday.

Football, basketball, and baseball teams, the Health Occupations Club, the Gay-Straight Alliance Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club, and many individual staff members of Carson High adopted more than 30 children from our community.

The gifts collected and distributed will make Christmas special for those children.

SPRING SPORTS

Spring sport sign-ups will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 in the north foyer. Sport packets are available at www.carsonhigh.com, under the Athletics tab.

Now is a good time to make doctor appointments for those needing sport physicals. Grade checks for eligibility will be based on the first semester grading period. Contact the Athletic Department at 283-1900 for more information.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Carson High School is proud to spotlight Kiara Riske. She maintains a weighted grade-point average of 4.47. Kiara is enrolled in three advanced-placement classes and two honors classes. Her plans include going to UNR and studying math, along with physics.

Kiara enjoys ballet dancing. She is involved in the robotics club at Carson High School and she is a National Honor Society member.
