The citizens of Carson City helped propel it to sixth place in a nationwide ranking of National Night Out events and earned the Carson City Sheriff’s Office recognition for citizen participation.National Night Out, which happened in August, is the “culmination of all the law enforcement and public safety initiatives conducted throughout the year that address crime and drugs,” according to the sheriff’s office.According to the National Association of Town Watch, 37.5 million people participated in the event across the nation with nearly 15,700 communities through bashes of one kind or another. The sixth-place ranking, for the population category, is the highest Carson City has ever reached, according to the sheriff’s office.Sheriff Ken Furlong said the office is grateful for the communitywide support, which was instrumental in achieving sixth place. Undersheriff Steve Albertsen said the event grows bigger and better year after year. The event lost many corporate sponsorships last year but the community stepped in to fill the void, he said.“The community heard about the situation and came to our rescue with tremendous response,” he said. “It was deeply gratifying and very humbling to see how many people wanted to help do something positive.”
