Senator Square: CHS Senators join Douglas Tigers in a good cause

RIVALS HAVE HEART

The rivalry between Douglas High and Carson High can be traced back many years on the field and on the court, but in recent years, the students at each of these schools have decided to put this rivalry to a good use. Two years ago, the students competed with one another and raised money within their schools for the earthquake victims of Haiti. This past week, the students were busy raising money among their fellow students for the Washoe Drive Fire victims.

All in all, the students raised more than $330, which will be donated to the Reno Red Cross to go directly to the victims of the recent fire. Good job to both CHS and DHS students!

ROBOTICS CHALLENGE

The robotics team at CHS, known as "The Bro-bots," will be practicing robotic skills Feb. 11 in a scrimmage against schools from Nevada, California and Utah in the CHS library.

The scrimmage will help them prepare for the competition coming up at CHS. The Bro-bots are excited to host the FIRST TECH Challenge on Feb. 25. This is the first-ever event held in Nevada and promises to be full of fun and exciting robotic challenges for students.

REFLECTIONS CONTEST

The Reflections Contest sponsored by CHS parent-teacher association last week was a huge success. Here are a list of the winners. PTSA will host an awards ceremony in February to officially congratulate all the top finishers. These individuals will also advance to the state competition.

ACCREDITATION UPDATE

The five-year school improvement process at Carson High School, also called accreditation, is moving right along. Three areas are the targeted: Communication systems between CHS and the school community, achievement of all students, and college and career readiness.

The staff researched more than 170 articles with ideas for improvement that are now being considered by the Steering Committee. The committee is made up of teachers, support staff, parents and students.

By the first week of March, the ideas will be organized for the Action Plan committees to take over. They will decide what we will do each year over the course of the next five years to make Carson an even more successful school.

GET FIT CLUB

There is a Get Fit Club that meets 2-3 p.m. after school. Participants do boot-camp style workouts and receive nutritional information, learning how to live a healthy lifestyle.

ALUMNI WINNERS

The fifth-annual Alumni Game was held this past weekend at CHS. More than 40 alumni attended. The oldest CHS alumnus in attendance was Mike Shaughnessy from the Class of 1953.

The classes of 1988, 2003 and 2011 were well represented with the most in attendance.

Winners of the raffle were Kris Barrette, Jennifer Palmer, Hailee Ackerman, Nick Durst, Gary Dutton, Lindy McDonald, Jazmyn Stokes, Zach Weismann, Mike Barrette, Mike Shaughnessy, Conrad Burt, Becky Lawson, Leann Saarem and Natalie Pieretti.

HISTORY TEACHERS ROCK

Northern Nevada held its regional Social Studies Conference at Damonte Ranch High School in Reno last weekend. CHS is proud that four teachers, Will Houk, Fred Steinle, Jenny Chandler and Nicole Fagundes gave time out of their weekends to collaborate with regional colleagues and hone their teaching skills.

The theme of the conference centered around helping equip students with the essential skills needed to "unpack" complex themes and challenging them to excel by raising standards.

Jenny Chandler and Nicole Fagundes were selected to present their work on an integrated World History unit focusing on global events of the Renaissance through a World's Fair project based unit.

Thank you for representing CHS and sharpening the skills of social studies teachers with your research and creativity.

STUDENT BODY ELECTIONS

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week's Senior Spotlight is on Kathleen Ogburn. She maintains a weighted grade-point average of 4.21. Kathleen's future plans include going to UNR in the fall and majoring in chemical engineering and minoring in art.

Her extracurricular activities include entering art shows and contests. She also works at In-N-Out Burger. Carson High School is proud of Kathleen and wishes her the best in her future.

STAFF FACT

Answer to last week's fact is Johnny Lang. Lang was in active duty of the U.S. Army for 25 years and a paratrooper for eight of those years prior to becoming a teacher.

Lang is a special-education teacher and also teaches government and U.S. History at CHS.

Thank you, Mr. Lang, for your many years of service to our country and our students!

New Fact: This staff person graduated from Sidney High School in 1983 in Sidney, Mont., and went on to play tight end and linebacker at Montana State University in Bozeman. He was a member of the 1984 Division I-AA National Championship team for the Bobcats of MSU.
