An urgent nationwide casting call has been issued for father/son-run businesses. A major cable network is casting a new reality series about family-owned father/son businesses.

Washoe fire fundraiser at Brewery Arts Center

Washoe valley artist Lady Jill Mueller will sell her prints from 1-3 p.m. March 3 at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery in conjunction with the Wine Walk.

Mueller, who has been a professional artist for 35 years, is selling her prints for only $15 to benefit the fire victims, the BAC Gallery, and to recover her cost of printing. Her home was very near the fire, and the tragedy affected her so much that she felt she needed to do something, however little.

The Nevada Artists Association, which is sponsoring the fundraiser, called this the sale of the year. Her framed prints generally sell for around $300, so besides benefiting the fire victims, the purchaser will have a beautiful piece of art to appreciate for years to come.

Books and Brags story time for pre-school kids

Books and Brags story time for pre-school children is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St. The themes for March are March 6, dinosaurs; March 13, Saint Patrick's Day; March 20 rainbows and flowers; March 27, owl baby.

Free concert planned for the family

The Capital City Community Band will celebrate its 34th concert season with its annual "A Salute To Young Musicians" concert at 3 p.m. March 11 in the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson Community Center.

This concert celebrates the talents of student musicians from Carson City. The free concert will feature the combined elementary choirs from Bordewich-Bray, Fremont, Fritsch, and Seeliger elementary schools performing a variety of songs.

The choirs also will perform patriotic music and songs from "Irving Berlin's America" with the band. The Carson High School Saxophone Quartet also will perform. Ben Osheroff, tuba, will perform "The Old Grumbly Bear" accompanied by the band.

The band will perform some Irish favorites, along with a variety of music including marches and patriotic music.

The combined choirs are under the direction of Alan Catron, Sandra Irvin, Carla Sims and Mary Law, and consist mainly of fourth and fifth grade students. Each choir meets before classes begin at each individual elementary school, and perform many concerts in our community.

Join the band in celebrating 33 years of sharing music with the community, and enjoy the music of the next generation of Carson City musicians.

It's time to fry those oysters

Calling all cooks and culinary connoisseurs from across the land, the annual festival honoring the discriminate cuisine of daring palates returns to historic Virginia City on March 17.

It's the 21st Annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry, and it takes place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Delta Saloon Parking Lot and Festival Grounds on the corner of C and Union streets downtown.

This annual tradition features both amateur and professional cooks whose special recipes and dishes feature the unique flavors and textures of Rocky Mountain Oysters - beef testicles, often referred to as beef fries. All entries will be officially judged to win big cash prizes, trophies, and of course, bragging rights.

Four categories will be judged including Best Overall Taste, Best Presentation, Most Creative Dish, and Best Booth. First place in the Best Overall Taste category wins a $500 cash prize, and everyone is welcome to enter.

There will be many ongoing fun and family-friendly activities throughout the day including the infamous annual St. Patrick's Day Parade down the middle of C Street at noon.

Dishes will be judged at 12:30 p.m., and the awards ceremony will be at 3 p.m.

Carson High School football boosters will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 5 in the upstairs cafeteria at CHS.

Annual event recognizes immunization success

The Northern Nevada Immunization Coalition will hold its 14th annual Silver Syringe Awards, which recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations who work to protect the Northern Nevada region from vaccine-preventable diseases.

This year's event will be from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. March 2 at The Grove at South Creek in Reno.

NNIC will award the following winners from the tri-county area:

• Douglas County School District: Outstanding Adolescent Immunization Program.

• Walgreens Pharmacy, Gardnerville: Outstanding Pharmacy Immunization Program.

¨• Lyon County Community Health, Yerington: Greatest Improvement Rate for 2 year olds.

Dog obedience classes offered

Guy Yeaman's basic dog obedience class, sponsored by Carson City Recreation, runs from March 6 through April 24. There will be no class March 27 or April 3.

The class meets from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Fuji Park. Registration is from 6-6:30 p.m. the first night of the class. Cost is $80 for six one-hour classes.

By using positive training methods, Yeaman will use his 45-plus years of experience to help dog owners to teach their dogs all of the basic obedience commands such as heel, sit, stand, stay and come. Results are guaranteed. During the session, Yeaman will address any and all issues participants may have with their dog.

Each dog needs to be current on all shots. Records must be shown at the time of registration. Dogs will need a training collar - choke chain, Halti, Martingale, head harness - or leather leash.

Second Saturday Arts Workshop offers charcoal class

Second Saturday Arts Workshops presents Introduction to Drawing With Charcoal, by Deana Hoover from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. March10 at Comma Coffee's "Between" classroom, 108-1/2 W. Fourth St.

The event costs $50. Students need to provide their own materials including a basic set of charcoal pencils, a pad of drawing paper of 80-pound or heavier, a pencil sharpener and an eraser.

There will be a half-hour break for lunch. Students are welcome to pack a sack lunch, or to eat at one of the restaurants within close walking distance of the classroom.

"Charcoals are an amazing medium that gives such a rich depth to drawing," Hoover said.

"There's nothing like spending time hands-on and getting a little messy. We'll spend time learning about the pencils themselves, but we'll also work with them. People will leave with a greater comfort level and better understanding of charcoal," she said.

Workshop will help get a jump on spring

David Ruf, owner of Greenhouse Garden Center, will give a free seminar, "Let's Get A Jump On Spring" at 11 a.m. March 3.

He will cover topics including how and when to fertilize, the benefits of using organics, and how to prevent weeds and bugs in your yard and garden this summer by taking measures now.

VE exams offered in Stagecoach

Regularly scheduled testing sessions for Amateur Radio licenses are now available in Stagecoach.

The next session will be on March 10. Registration will begin from 8-9 a.m. The testing will end around noon. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcome. The exam fee is $15, and checks should be made payable to ARRL-VEC.

Testing is always on the second Saturday of March, June, September, and December of each year. The 2012 schedule is: March 10, June 9, September 8, and December 8.

Testing will take place at the Stagecoach Community Center, 8200 Highway 50 East next to the old fire station on the west side of Stagecoach Hill. Coming from the west, turn right at the fire station just before climbing the hill to Silver Springs. From the east, turn left just as you get to the fire station coming down Stagecoach Hill. Signs will be posted.

Those who are upgrading an existing license should bring their original license and a photocopy of that license, as well as the originals of any CSCEs. Remember to bring photocopies, as there are no copying facilities on site.

Douglas GOP women to meet

Douglas County Republican Women's Club will meet March 7 at Carson Valley Inn in Minden. Doors open at 11 a.m. Meeting and hot buffet lunch begins at 11:45 a.m. Cost is $20 per person.

Guest speaker will be Shannon Harris, branch director of the Carson Valley Unit for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, which offers daily group and individual programs to local youth.

Membership in DCRW is open to any registered Republican woman.
