Julia Ann Bowers of Carson City was given Judge James T. Russell's blessing to pursue an alcohol abuse recovery class after she pleaded guilty to her third DUI, a felony. If she completes the class, the DUI will be knocked down to a misdemeanor. She also will be on probation for three to five years.
Bowers' attorney, Marcie E. Ryba, told the court that Bowers had been sober and attending Alcoholics Anonymous three times a week since her October arrest.
"I consider this third offense a blessing in disguise because it has opened my eyes to many things," Bowers said Monday in Carson City District Court, noting that she is thankful she didn't hurt anyone. "I realize that I am powerless over my alcohol addiction."
Russell noted that her evaluation of likelihood to succeed in the treatment program was only "fair," a lower grade than he usually sees. But he wished her luck in beating the addiction.
"I think you're going to have a struggle, but hopefully you make it," he said.
