Atlantis Casino Resort and John Ascuaga's Nugget have launched programs to recycle organic wastes such as food scraps.

Working with Waste Management on what it believes to be the first casino organics recycling program, the Atlantis estimates that it will divert 80 cubic yards of waste a month from landfills.

Kitchen staff at the Atlantis will separate food scraps from general waste, and the scraps will be composted at a northern Nevada facility.

The Nugget, meanwhile, is working with Castaway Trash Hauling of Lockwood to collect organic materials for composting.

The property already was separating cardboard, glass, plastic and aluminum from its trash stream. The Nugget is generating about one cubic yard of recyclable material a day, said Brent Johnson, its manager of janitorial services.
