Annual Advocates to End Domestic Violence fundraiser Saturday

This year's Taste of Downtown on Saturday evening will feature 43 restaurants, the most in the history of the event.

"That's a lot of food," said Lisa Lee, director of Advocates to End Domestic Violence, which hosts the fundraiser. "There's going to be a little bit of everything for everyone."

The fundraiser began in 1995, with seven restaurants, one band and 500 tickets sold.

Throughout the years, it has grown to dozens of restaurants, several live bands, and tickets are capped at 2,000.

Lee said it has become a signature event for the community, saying she spoke with one woman who plans her summer around the Taste of Downtown.

"I think Carson City is at its best that night," Lee said. "Everyone's out and about. The streets are just packed. The smells are great. The music is great."

For the $35 ticket, participants can sample fare from eateries set up along 13 blocks through historic downtown.

Lee said it has traditionally been a way for restaurants to get their name and food out to large numbers of people at one time.

It's also a way for patrons to find new places to eat.

"(My husband) always ends up finding a restaurant didn't know about," she said.

Tasting begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 9. In addition to the food and entertainment, participants also will be able to hop aboard trolleys that will travel from Spear Street to Carson Mall. Along the way, participants can browse more than 20 shops and galleries offering raffle and door prizes.

"I think it's great to see your town from behind the scenes," Lee said. "Most of us just drive through."

All proceeds benefit the shelter and support services of Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

"It's a good way to taste your way through downtown, and, if you're hungry to help, this is the way," Lee said.
