Obituary: Colonel Oliver Pratt, Jr.

Colonel Oliver Pratt Jr. passed away in his home on June 18, 2012. He died peacefully in the arms of his loving wife, Dorothy.

Nick was born October 31,1927 in Carson City to Oliver Pratt Sr., & wife Edna. He was a third generation Nevadan, and lifelong resident of Carson City.

After attending Carson High School he worked briefly for the Nevada Dept of Transportation on a survey crew. This afforded him the opportunity to travel all over the state. Traveling in and out of the State was a pastime he enjoyed throughout out his life.

In 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the American Occupation of Japan post World War II. After returning from Japan, he continued his service in the military. His career spanned nearly 40 years. Colonel Pratt was Chief of Staff for the Nevada Military Department when he retired in 1982. Nick was proud to serve his country, and especially his State. He was a staunch believer in individual freedoms. Those same personal freedoms that are a foundation of this State.

Nick met and married his first wife, Rose Marie Satti, in 1949. They had two children, Joe and Linda. They continued to live, work and play in Northern Nevada--at one point owning a small Arabian Horse Ranch in the Dayton area.

After retirement, Nick was able to pursue his many interests. He especially loved stream fishing in Ely, enjoying a cocktail on his boat on Lake Tahoe, and plinking cans with his .22 in the desert. He married his wife, Dorothy, in 1990. Together they enjoyed traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver & Edna Pratt, and his first wife, Rose Marie. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Carson City; son, Joe Pratt (Vicki) of Winnemucca; daughter, Linda Christian (Larry) of Dallas; son-in-law, Tom Dawson ( Donna ) of Albany, OR; brother, Gordon Pratt of Carson City; sister, Shirley Pratt Cunningham of Carson City; granddaughter, Leslie Pratt of Reno; grandsons, Clayton (Jill), Jeff & Jon Christian, of Dallas; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a Military Graveside Service at Lone Mountain Cemetery, Veterans' Section, on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 1PM. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Veterans Charity of your choice. Arrangements are being made by Walton's Funeral Home.
