Senator Square: Carson students to take proficiency tests this week

Carson High had another outstanding week of receiving awards. Our school not only measures up, but is outshining the competition.

PROFICIENCY TESTING THIS WEEK

Students will be taking proficiency tests this coming week at CHS. Please note the following schedule and make arrangements for your high school students to be there for the testing. If your child is not testing, then class does not begin until 10:30 a.m.

We will resume regular schedule on Friday. Start time for test takers is the normal 7:50 am.

BROBOTS WIN CHAMPIONSHIP

The CHS robotics team, the Brobots, won the Northern Nevada FIRST Tech Challenge Championship this past weekend. The 10-member team is advised and coached by teacher Adam Whatley.

Winning qualifies them for the World Festival to be held in St. Louis, Mo., April 25-28.

The team is looking for fundraising opportunities and donations to help with the expenses of this trip. If you can help, contact Adam Whatley at awhatley@carson.k12.nv.us. Congrats Brobots!

CHS CHOIR ALL-STATE SELECTIONS & CONCERTS

Carson High School Choral Program had 13 students successfully audition for the 2012 Nevada Music Educators Association All-State High School Choir. The following were selected to attend. Sopranos: Bella Favero, Stephanie Gansberg, Jennifer Huckabay and Chrislyn Lyon. Altos: Jen Lombardo and Laura Mohlenkamp. Tenors: Nathan Menke and Tyler Torres. Basses: Ivan Gates, Brandon Hall, Nathan Hazard and Michael Irvin.

Carson had three freshmen students selected for the choral ensemble and has one student, Jennifer Lombardo, that is a four year all-state choir member.

One of our CHS students, Brandon Dodge, also successfully auditioned for two other NMEAAll-State Ensembles and chose to participate as a percussionist in the All-State High School Concert Band. There are three upcoming concerts as well as Solo and Ensemble.

• Musical theater concert: 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carson City Community Center.

• Choral concert: 7 p.m. Wednesday at Carson City Community Center.

• Choir Palooza Concert, featuring CHS with EVMS, CMS, Seeliger, Borderwich, Fremont and Fritsch Choirs: 7 p.m. March 15 in the CHS Big Gym.

CHS INSTRUMENTAL ALL-STATE SELECTIONS

Great news from the instrumental music program at Carson High! We had eight students accepted into the All-State ensembles in winds and percussion. We have the highest representation of any school in Northern Nevada. Here is the list of names, instrument and ensemble placement: Greta Sturm, second chair flute, orchestra; Christina Dietlein, third chair bass clarinet, band; Jessica Dodge, second chair alto saxophone, band; Richard Long, second chair euphonium, band.

Brandon Dodge, 10th chair percussion, band; Zoey Gray, fifth chair percussion, orchestra; Jonathan Kondor, second chair percussion, orchestra; Daniel Cihigoyenetche, 13th chair percussion, band.

MR. CARSON HIGH

Mr. Carson High is a tradition of the Carson Cheer Program that helps raises money for the Carson cheerleaders. Mr. Carson High is considered a male "beauty pageant" in which 16 guys of the senior class of 2012 applies to participate.

Mr. Carson High is divided up into three parts: an all-boys dance that is a basic routine for fun and to show their silly side, the formal dance in which the boys pair up with a CHS cheerleader in an elegant routine that showcases the maturity of the young man, and individual routine in which he chooses his own talent to showcase.

The 2012 candidates for Mr. Carson High are: Tommy Champion, Samuel Sorenson, Tyrel Keefer, Brock Pradere, Andrew Peckham, Clint Page, Drew Moreland, Aaron Spurlock, Simon White, Alec Whipple, Tim Grunert, Jacob Myers, Michael Walters, Jared Dempsey, Nick Garcia, and Scott Tilton.

Mr. Carson High will be 7 p.m. Friday in the big gym at Carson High School.

PROSTART FUNDRAISER FOR NATIONALS

The culinary arts students who recently won state and are headed to nationals are raising money for this trip. They are hosting a fundraiser on March 15 at the Governor's Mansion. It will be a Beer Pairing and Silent Auction. Tickets for the event cost $35 each. You can purchase these tickets at Bibee and Associates or Grandma Hattie's. SENIOR PROJECT

Mary Analiza Ong, a senior at Carson High School will be hosting an Eight-Ball Pool/Billiards Double Elimination Tournament for her senior project.

The tournament will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at The Twisted Spoke off of Highway 50 on the corner of N. Deer Run Road. Anyone under the age of 21 is allowed to participate.

A $5 fee will be used to hold the participants place in the tournament. A parent or guardian of the participant is required to be at the event on premises. Contact Francine Emond at 283-1672 during school hours or contact her via e-mail at emondf@gmail.com to sign-up.

TEACHERS OF THE MONTH

Two weeks ago teachers among our staff were recognized with plaques as our "Teachers of the Month" for the months of December through March. Those honored were: Emily Thornburg, math; Phil Brady, English; Betty Foerster, business & computers; and MaryAnne Weaver, math. Congrats to these teachers for all their efforts in the classroom with our students!

STAFF FACT

Answer to last week's fact is Sarah Lobsinger, math teacher originally from Oklahoma who taught the lead singer of the All American Rejects.

New Fact:

This staff person worked in politics as a field representative for a U.S. Senator and a U.S. Congressman prior to teaching.
