Cooler weather and a chance of showers won't stop many of the events taking place this Memorial Day weekend.

Temperatures are supposed to stay in the upper 50s Friday and Saturday, with a chance of rain on both days. On Sunday, the high is supposed to be around 70. On Monday, highs are supposed to be in the lower 80s.

A Memorial Day service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lone Mountain Cemetery off Beverly Drive.

Events taking place this weekend:

• Carson Plaza, an independent senior retirement community, is hosting events daily during the weekend.

Events include a happy hour at 2 p.m. Friday; a veterans recognition at 2 p.m. Saturday; an open house at 2 p.m. Sunday; and a military appreciation with a BBQ bash at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

• The Nevada State Railroad Museum hosts three days of events during Memorial Day weekend.

A new exhibit will be on display in the Jacobsen Interpretive Center that shows the contribution of railroads to the history of Nevada. The exhibit will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Also on display will be the 1910 McKeen Motorcar; 1926 Edwards Motorcar; 1913 V&T Locomotive No. 27 with freight cars; and the French National Merci "40 and 8" Boxcar. The outdoor and annex exhibits will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

Rides on the historic Virginia & Truckee train with steam locomotive No. 25 will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Train rides are about 30 minutes. All-inclusive tickets for adults are $11; children 12-17 are $5; children 4-11 are $3; children 3 and younger are free.

Tickets are available at the museum admissions desk and the Wabuska Depot. The museum is at 2180 S. Carson St.

• The Carson City-Virginia City trains are on track starting Saturday, with an opening day celebration through Oct. 21.

The Sisters in History Route is Friday through Sunday from Carson City to Virginia City, one-ways and round trips, days and evenings; one-hour, 30-minutes trip each way.

Ticket prices for a steam round trip are $48 adult, $28 child, $42 senior/veteran on Saturdays and Sundays from May 26 to Oct. 21. Departs at 10 a.m.

Ticket prices for a diesel round trip are $32 adult, $19 child, $29 senior/veteran on Fridays on June 1, June 15 through Sept. 7, Sept. 21 and Oct. 5. Departs at 10 a.m.

The Historic Route is daily from Virginia City to Gold Hill and back. These are seven shorter 35-minute round trips daily.

Ticket prices for steam round trip $11 adult, $4.50 child or $24 for an all-day pass. Prices for diesel round trip are $9 adult, $4.50 child or $18 for an all-day pass. Runs from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from May 26-Oct. 31.

• Virginia City will once again be bustling with a slew of events all weekend long. The events will be highlighted by the Memorial Day Parade down C Street at noon Saturday.

There also will be gunfights in the street from the Devil's Gate Gunfighters, a wine walk from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and more. The inaugural wine walk will feature 27 local merchants who will be serving wines and snacks. Commemorative Railfest wine glasses will be sold for $10 each with all proceeds to benefit the Virginia City 4th of July Fireworks Fund. Wine walk glasses may be purchased at a special booth on C Street, right next to the monument in the center of town.

The Saturday events are free to the public, except the wine walk ($10 per glass) and V&T Railroad tickets.

• Evergreen Gene's will host its annual Memorial Day BBQ from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, to honor veterans and thank the community for its support over the past year. Everyone is invited to enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers.

All veterans will receive a 25 percent discount on purchases at the store that day as well as free food.
