Senator Square: Safe Grad 5K fundraiser Saturday; Veterans Day ceremony Wednesday

Welcome back to another edition of news from Carson High School. We finished up a successful week of proficiency testing and relief was immediately seen on the students’ faces by the time Friday rolled around. On another note, I was contacted this week by the Safe Grad committee who put on the graduation celebration for seniors. One of their fundraisers, the 5k walk/run, coming up has had a slow response of people to sign up. The 5K walk/ run will be held on Nov. 10 at the CHS campus.All of the money raised that day goes back to the committee for Safe Grad celebration. The registration fee for adults is $30 and $20 for students 18 and younger.Contact Rene Knorzer at rknorzer@aol.com to register.VETERANS DAYCEREMONYThe Naval Junior ROTC Unit will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 9:40 a.m. Nov. 7 in Senator Square. The unit will recognize veterans from different wars and extend a special invitation to them, along with Blue and Gold Star Mothers. Veterans and Blue and Gold Star mothers are invited for refreshments after the ceremony, compliments of the culinary classes. Contact the NJROTC Unit at 775-283-1780 for information.STUDENT COUNCIL REPORTAs the holiday season draws nearer, there are a lot of festivities coming up at Carson High. This Thursday there will be the Academic Letter Ceremony for students who have been receiving outstanding grades while in high school. On Nov. 10. all of the winter sports tryouts will begin.On Nov. 15, Carson High School will be hosting its annual Thanksgiving scavenger hunt. This event allows students to go around town and collect Thanksgiving treats to donate to FISH. (Report submitted by Lydia Lopez, Student Council Public Relations Officer).CHS SENIOR ATFFA NATIONALSMikayla Story is a senior at CHS and the current FFA President. She recently represented Nevada and her high school Capitol FFA Chapter in Indianapolis for the National FFA Conference.Story is the current state dairy cattle handling champion and competed at the national level in Indianapolis. Dairy handling requires the competitor to successfully handle the cattle and present the anima to a panel of judges, making the animal look as desirable and profitable to potential buyers. Mikayla was awarded a silver emblem in the national competition. Way to go Mikayla!ELECTION NIGHT PARTYThe new political science club at CHS is hosting an election night watch party for students in room 246 from 5:30-9 p.m. on Tuesday. Aly Cadwell and Angila Golik, government teachers at CHS, will be on board to answer questions and explain results as they are reported by the media.President Walker Barnett and vice president Shane Baker, both seniors at CHS will also be on hand. Barnett and Baker have been running the club successfully since the beginning of the school board, even though they land on opposite end of the political spectrum.STUDENTS TO ATTEND INAUGURATIONEleven students from CHS will be traveling with Mrs. Golik, CHS government teacher, to the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C. in January.The students have been busy fundraising for the past year to raise money for this event. The students are unsure about who they will be seeing on the steps of the U.S. Capitol taking the presidential oath, but they are excited, nonetheless to witness such a historical event.If you would like to make a donation to the group of students attending to help them defray the cost of the travel, please contact Angila Golik at agolik@carson.k12.nv.us.ELECTION HELPERSStudents from honors and advanced-placement government classes will be visible on Tuesday at both polling places in Carson City. The Elections office in Carson has been utilizing the volunteer service of CHS students for many years. Students will be helping voters in a variety of ways. This experience is a great hands-on government lesson for the students as they will get to see and help with the election.SENIOR SPOTLIGHTReliable, steady and sure, upbeat. These are just a few of the words one can use to describe this week’s Senior Spotlight, Cruz Kerver. If Cruz isn’t outside camping, snowboarding, playing soccer or riding his dirt bike, you will find Cruz hard at work with his studies.While helping the CHS varsity soccer team to the state playoffs, Cruz has maintained a 4.4 grade-point average. Cruz credits his grandfather for fostering his passion for architecture and is considering pursuing a career in engineering or architecture.Next year, Cruz plans on attending UNR where he will major in engineering or architecture.
