Veterans Day events abound

As Veterans Day approaches, so do a flurry of events to honor veterans for their service.

Veterans Day is officially recognized on Sunday, Nov. 11.

The first Veterans event is at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday at Carson High School in Senator's Square. The Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps will end their ceremony at 10:30 and will recognize veterans from different wars. The cadets are expanding a special invitation to Blue and Gold Star Mothers, mothers who have or had a child in the military.

Refreshments after the ceremony will be offered by the Carson High School culinary class. Questions can be directed to the unit at 775-283-1780.

On Veterans Day proper, the Carson Valley Inn in Minden will be hosting a free spaghetti lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for veterans and one guest, per veteran.

Veterans and active military need just present their military identification to gain entrance. A presentation of colors will take place at 11, to be made by the Douglas County Sheriffs Explorer Scout Troop, followed by an invocation by Father Paul McCollum. Kimora Whitacre, 8, will sing the national anthem and at 12:30, Lacy Dalton will sing "God Bless America."

The 2011 spaghetti lunch drew over 500 people, according to the organizers.

On Nov. 14, a special tribute to the remaining Pearl Harbor survivors in the area will be held at the Veterans Day meeting of the Carson City Council of the Nevada League of the United States.

The meeting, at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, begins at 6:30 with dinner, although socializing happens between 5:30 and then. Guest speaker Rear Admiral Mark Vance, will update the group on the training going on at the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center at the Fallon Naval Air Station. Vance is the center's commander. Tickets cost $25, which covers the buffet dinner. Reservations can be called in to Bud Southard at 775-882-7960.
