Symphony starting season with Scandinavian music, guest artist

Scandinavian music, a Swedish guest artist and the Carson City Symphony Orchestra will come together when the orchestra begins its 29th season Oct. 21, but there also will be jazz on tap.The symphony, under the direction of David Bugli, will perform in a concert called “Scandinavia & All That Jazz” starting at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater.Featured guest soloist is Swedish pianist Carl Petersson. Among works planned are Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, Symphonic Dances on Norwegian Themes, also by Grieg, and Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 by Hugo Alfven.Petersson is a native of Sweden and a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, Denmark. He is completing doctoral work in piano performance at the Music Academy in Krakow, Poland.Also on the program is “It’s About Time: Styles for Jazz Combo & Orchestra” by Bugli, which covers the evolution of jazz and pop music styles.Pre-concert entertainment in the lobby will begin at 3 p.m. and be handled by STRAZZ, the youth strings group in Carson City, playing Scandinavian dance tunes.In the Sierra Room at 3:15 p.m. there will be a free concert preview. There also will be a post-concert dinner reception at Garibaldi’s Ristorante Italiano, which requires reservations.
