A Carson City woman faces charges of embezzling $140,000 from a local business where she worked as office manager, and allegedly using the money for gambling and "to survive."
Barbara Jean Larson, 56, was office manager for CINC Industries Inc. until Sept. 24, when the company president, Bret Sheldon, fired her after discovering she had been allegedly issuing checks made payable to herself, according to a sheriff's office report. Sheldon said Larson was responsible for accounts payable and receivable and managed the finances of the business.
Larson spoke to detectives in a recorded interview after being arrested and brought to the sheriff's office.
"Larson freely admitted to altering the bank registers to conceal the fact that she had issued numerous checks made payable to herself," according to the report.
The report states that Larson said the allegedly embezzled money had been used "to survive or she gambled it away." She also said she was responsible for her 87-year-old mother and her grandchildren.
She was arrested on Oct. 9 and charged with obtaining money by false pretenses, uttering a forged instrument and embezzlement. Her bail was set at $30,000.
