Firefighters racing wind to slow flames

While the Carter Springs fire continues to pump out smoke into Western Nevada, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

As of 1:30 p.m., Highway 395 is open both directions with pilot vehicles escorting motorists through the smoky Pine Nut Mountains.

The fire has held at just over 2,000 acres and is burning in mostly Bureau of Land Management territory. No structures have been lost.

Hand crews are racing the wind, which is expected to pick up this afternoon to 10-15 mph, gusting to 25-30 mph. There's a very slight chance of rain fall over the area.

Nine air tankers, five helicopters, five hand crews and 20 fire engines are working the fire.
