The Virginia City Community Chest and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association were among recipients of this year’s first-quarter grants from the NV Energy Foundation.
Karl Walquist, an NVE spokesman in the utility’s Reno office, said the foundation provided $10,000 to each of those Northern Nevada recipients in the January-March period of 2013.
Overall in both the northern and southern sectors of Nevada, the foundation provided $389,000 in donations — which included some multi-year commitments — to various nonprofit organizations.
Others in the north were the DRI (Desert Research Institute) GreenPower Program, the American Red Cross-Northern Nevada Chapter, the Nevada Museum of Art, Imlay Safe Haven Rescue Zoo and the Winnemucca Senior Center.
In the south, donations went to the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, United Way of Southern Nevada, College of Southern Nevada Foundation, the Cultural Diversity Foundation, Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada and the Assistance League of Las Vegas.
Foundation grants are focused on education, the environment, youth development, arts and multicultural outreach, and health and human services.
