140 YEARS AGO

The Mormon Conference is in full blast. The attendance is very large and still increasing. Brigham Young delivered a long discourse today, the main point of which being against Gentile sectarian schools being introduced. He urged mothers to educate their own children and not to allow outsiders to interfere in the Kingdom of God — Press Dispatch.

130 YEARS AGO

News of the terrible affliction has reached us. Just two weeks ago H.T. Tucker of the Nevada State Prison married young Mrs. Tucker in San Francisco. A few days ago she came down with scarlet fever and yesterday died at the residence of Mr. E.B. Cutts. Words of condolence are useless.

100 YEARS AGO

Word has been received as to the death of W.F. Brown, better known as “Baldy,” one of the best-known locomotive engineers in Nevada. He took an active role in brotherhood affairs and was a prominent player in politics. He will be missed as any man in this section.

70 YEARS AGO

A drive to make Nevada the first “V-state” will be launched April 15. Hugh Shamberger, state director of civilian defense, says 60 percent of communities must qualify as “V-communities” to make Nevada a “V-state.” To be a “V-home” a block leader must follow to the letter instructions of air raid wardens.

50 YEARS AGO

The Carson City Council last night approved placement of a stop light at the corner of Fifth and Carson streets.

20 YEARS AGO

Douglas County officials are slated to consider an agreement with South Lake Tahoe on a revised deadline for the loop road extension from Stateline into California.
