Jason Richard Thrift victim in fatal Gardnerville shooting

A 33-year-old Gardnerville man has been identified as the victim in a deadly Monday morning shooting that occurred on Toler Lane.

Jason Richard Thrift, 33, and roommate Nicole Followill, 29, were involved in a dispute at about 11:20 a.m., with one of them apparently moving out.

During the argument, Followill allegedly produced a handgun and shot Thrift once, killing him, according to Sheriff’s Spokesman Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Followill is being held on an open murder charge after the shooting, the second fatal Carson Valley shooting in 11 days.

Nicole Christine Followill was booked into the Douglas County Jail without bail, according to Brooks. She is scheduled to appear in East Fork Justice Court for arraignment on Wednesday.

The home was cordoned off, and Toler Lane closed at Lampe Drive and Mountain Court for most of Monday, forcing buses from nearby Gardnerville Elementary School to detour.

The school is about three blocks down the street from the incident. Deputies quickly ensured no one else was in the home, and the scene was reported clear within minutes of their arrival.

Superintendent of Schools Lisa Noonan said the school was not put on any special alert.

“School was able to proceed as usual,” she said.

Parents whose children walk to school were notified to pick them up if they didn’t want them to take an alternate route while Toler was closed.

Sheriff Ron Pierini said Followill and her brother were interviewed about the incident.

A neighbor living across Toler said she heard arguing and a single gun shot.

Pierini said that the incident was related to a domestic dispute.

Furniture and clothing were on the front lawn of the property when deputies first arrived. The body of the man was lying in the home’s entryway.

Douglas County investigators received a search warrant for the home at 1355 Toler. Their investigation was aided by the Washoe Crime Lab.

Pierini and District Attorney Mark Jackson were among those onscene.

According to the Douglas County Assessor’s Office, the home is a rental.

This is the second fatal shooting in under two weeks in Carson Valley.

On Nov. 21, an 81-year-old Fish Springs man allegedly shot and killed a woman who was caring for him.

Melvin Oneal Norlund appeared in justice court last week facing charges of shooting Catherine Mary Costanza. He told the judge that the shooting was accidental. He is being held in lieu of $1 million.
