Werner out the door with many thanks

Larry Werner isn’t Carson City’s city manager anymore.

He exited that role to enter retirement Thursday, running the show during his last Board of Supervisors meeting, at which he was thanked profusely by board members and staff colleagues. Mayor Robert Crowell presented him a framed proclamation lauding years of service to the community.

“This is tough,” said Werner after a morning ceremony honoring him. He said it’s tough mainly because of the people he leaves behind.

“I think it’s because everybody’s trying to pull together for a great community.”

Observers found it intriguing that on Werner’s final day, Fire Chief Stacey Giomi also received recognition for his 30 years with city government and the fire department. Giomi said after Werner announced his retirement in October that he might consider applying for the city manager’s post, but he will await board direction on where it wants the city to head, the type of new permanent manager it wants, and the pay involved.

Those details are expected to be nailed down after the holidays at the second board meeting next year, on Jan. 16. During the interim, Deputy City Manager Marena Works will be at the helm to lead city staffers.

Werner took over as city manager from Linda Ritter and has served in that capacity since early 2008. He is a civil engineer and was working for Carson City when the management opportunity came.

His government career spanned many posts in both Nevada and the state of Washington.
