AGC honors contractors, SIR winners

Granite Construction Company's Nevada Division and Pavers Plus Inc. were named top general and subcontractor for 2012 by members of the Nevada Chapter of the Associated General Contractors last week.

Leo P. Bergin III, Geno Martini and Mike Cate, meanwhile, received the organization's SIR Award the acronym stands for "Skill, Integrity, Responsibility" for contributions to life in northern Nevada and contributions to the construction industry.

Granite Construction's Nevada Division, part of a $2 billion company that specializes in infrastructure products, has a long history in the region. Most recently, it completed reconstruction and repaving of Interstate 80 through downtown Reno.

Pavers Plus, Inc. of Reno was founded in 2002 by John Garrett and Mike Cate. The firm provides masonry, concrete placement, and interlocking concrete paver systems, and its current projects include the UNR Earthquake Lab expansion.

Western Nevada Supply of Sparks, meanwhile, was recognized as supplier of the year. The company has been owned by the Reviglio family since it was established more than 40 years ago.

Pezonella Associates Inc. of Reno was recognized as Design Professional of the Year. The firm, which provides geotechnical engineering and materials-testing services, was founded by Ray Pezonella in 1977.

Bergin, a partner in McDonald Carano Wilson, was recognized for his work with construction and real estate projects during four decades. He also is a farmer who grows organic lettuce and has strong supported youth programs ranging from 4-H and Future Farmers of America to the Boys and Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows.

Martini, mayor of Sparks, has overseen the city government during a time when more than 1 million square feet of retail space opened in the city, the fifth largest in the state.

Cate, the chief executive of Pavers Plus and the president of Construction Development Services Inc., was recognized for his work as a founder of ACE Charter School, his work as a member of the board of Truckee Meadows Water Authority and his work to improve schools and other infrastructure in Nevada.
