Planning Commission discussion reviews BAC's old events option

Carson City's Planning Commission Wednesday received an update on the status of a Brewery Arts Center plan to construct an outdoor events plaza based an earlier permit, which is now being extended.

Planning Director Lee Plemel said the special use permit was good through Dec. 15 this year, but another year is authorized administratively and so the project could be delayed until late 2014.

The plan approved earlier would include closure of Minnesota Street from King to 2nd streets, but not until funds are raised for the work.

The proposed plaza at 449 W. King St. originally was approved by the commission on Dec. 15, 2010.

But the commission was told by John P. Copoulos, architect for the proposed project, that the BAC "took a big hit" during the economic downturn.

"I think having the year extension is going to help them," said Copoulos.

The commission also received an update from the city Parks and Recreation Department on upcoming construction of the multi-use athletic center.

The facility at 1870 Russell Way, with two high school-sized gymnasiums and an elevated track, will cost about $5.4 million and be paid for by Question 18 Quality of Life funding. Question 18 was approved by Carson City voters in 1996.

The commission learned from Vern Krahn, departmental park planner, that the project is expected to begin in August near the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and should be ready by late 2014.

Krahn said the project was cut from $10 million and 36,000 square feet to the current anticipated cost and 32,000 square feet, but plans allow for possible expansion later.
