New baby for the new year

Levi Alan Buscay Leuty garnered the honors of being the first baby born in 2013 in Carson City, coming into the world at 1:14 p.m. on New Year’s day at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.On Wednesday, four generations — including baby Levi and parents Heather Harrison and Adam Buscay — were in the hospital room. They were joined by Levi’s grandparents, Joann and David Leuty and Joe and Sarah Buscay, and his great-grandfather Don Zamzow.Zamzow smiled as he looked at the baby, saying, “Nothing really bothers him,” and telling the father, “You’ve got a fishing buddy now.”Levi’s sister Courtney, 3, who was born on Valentine’s day, is ready and willing to take care of her newborn brother.“She’s all jazzed up,” Buscay said.“She wants to feed him, she wants to help do everything,” Levi’s mom added.Their new baby boy is two pounds lighter than his sister was when she was born. Levi weighed 6 pounds and measured 18 inches.“He’s a lot smaller than his sister was,” Harrison said.Levi, a quiet but squeaky boy, was put on oxygen for several hours on Tuesday. Although he doesn’t need oxygen anymore, he is on antibiotics to help fend off a minor infection.“He’s on antibiotics, but he’s perfect,” Harrison said.Harrison would have preferred Levi and his sister Courtney came in the opposite order, a boy first and then a girl, but said she’s happy with how everything worked out.“I have a girl and a boy now,” she said.Levi’s middle name, Alan, comes from a tradition of middle names starting with “A” that she wanted to continue, Harrison said. “Dad’s, mine, his, all the middle names start with an A,” she said.When it came time for the birth, Buscay was brought to tears at the sight of his first child.“He cried, crybaby,” Harrison said. “I must have been so happy.” Buscay said, looking at the tiny child Harrison held and adding, “I mean, he’s so small. He’s tiny to me. It’s weird.”Levi’s birth wasn’t the easiest. Harrison was due to have a Caesarean section on Jan. 18. She came in to the hospital on New Year’s Eve but was sent back home. She came back on New Year’s Day morning, around 10:45 a.m. and Levi arrived by normal childbirth at 1:14 p.m.“They went ahead and did it,” she said. “I was ready.”Harrison and Buscay plan to head back to Dayton on Thursday with baby Levi in tow.
