Coming soon? Ross sign sprouts at Carson City's Southgate

Ross, the retailer with nearly 1,100 stores in 35 jurisdictions across the country, apparently will have one in Carson City eventually.

A sign saying Ross will locate in vacant Southgate Mall space, which is between JC Penney and Burlington Coat Factory, sprouted there recently. It appeared over the main door to the vacated space that may amount to 25,000 square feet.

There already is a Ross outlet in northern Douglas County. But the company, which bills itself as a dress-for-less marketer, could close it if responses from a manager there and a customer service representative prove accurate.

Attempts to contact an official Ross media spokesperson drew no response Friday.

But Tonia Calderon, manager of the Ross outlet on Jacks Valley Road, knew about the sign, as did the customer service person. Both said they had been told it was put up prematurely and may get taken down. It was still up at Saturday afternoon.

Calderon said she had been told any move into the state capital may not come until 2015; the customer service representative said 2014. But both said they had yet to be told anything definite about a move.

"I've been told that no contracts have been signed," said Calderon.

In December, however, then Carson City Supervisor Shelly Aldean said 25,000 Square Feet of in-line retailing Southgate space could be filled at some point - perhaps some time this year.

Ross has stores in 33 states, Washington, D.C. and Guam. Corporate offices are in Pleasanton, Calif., and the company's website reports it has $8.6 billion in revenues.

The company, which trades publicly under the symbol ROST, closed the week Friday at $57.95 per share.
