I just returned to my room from an all-school assembly, where we were told we were going to be informed of new security measures at the school. I am happy to announce that it was actually an assembly to recognize one of our teachers as the new Nevada State Teacher of the Year, Adam Whatley. I echo my colleagues’ sentiments when I say congratulations Adam, it is an honor to work alongside you and I believe you are very deserving of this award!STUDENT COUNCIL REPORTAfter a three-day weekend, it is time for Winterfest 2013! This week is hosted by the class of 2014, and the entire school gets decorated according to the theme. The theme this year is Candyland! Here is what is going on each day!Tuesday: Dress up in your class colors. Freshmen are yellow, sophomores are green, juniors are red and seniors are blue.Night activity: CHS will be turned into a life-sized game of Candyland at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Senator Square! Bring comfortable clothes and be prepared to have a sweet adventure!Wednesday: It’s time to embrace your inner prince and princess! Put on your fanciest outfit and shine like royalty. It is also the day of the assembly! Our candidates will be introduced and will be playing a candidate game and there will be a few surprises during the assembly! That night at 6 p.m., there will be a teacher vs. student basketball game in the big gym. There is a $3 fee and only $2 with your student-body card sticker.Thursday: It’s time to explore the peppermint forest, so wear some stripes or polka-dots! Carson High School will be hosting a concert 7-8:30 p.m., Senator Square. The pop/rock band Goodnight Argent from EMI Music will be performing covers of the Top 40 songs as well as their original music! The band has been presented on MTV, Bravo, and Showtime as well as receiving prizes and awards from the John Lennon Songwriting Concert, Billboard, and ISC! There will be an entrance fee of $2 with a student-body card sticker or $3 without.However, a student ID is mandatory to attend and the Student Store will be open for refreshments to enjoy during the concert. So bring your friends and come for a great time with fantastic music!Friday: Dress up in your craziest clothes and go nuts! That night is also the night that the king and queen candidates get crowned at the half time of the boys basketball that is at 7 p.m. They will be crowned by the one and only Miss Carson City Vannesa Macias.Saturday: It’s time to dance! It is semi-formal and it’s from 7-10 p.m. Tickets will be sold all week. Tuesday and Wednesday it will cost $5 with student body card $7 without. Thursday and Friday it will be $7 with student-body card and $9 without and $15 at the door!WINTERFEST ROYALTY CANDIDATESCongratulations to the following seniors who were voted as the royalty candidates for this coming week’s Winterfest celebration. For the ladies, it is Kellcy Bell, Hailey Canfield, Ali Davis, Shannon Flaherty, Kenzie Tillit and Kalee Young. For the young men, Sage Smith, Fransisco Angular, Sergio Zarate, Lexington Garraway, Jacob Connell and Nate Hazard.THEATER PERFORMANCECHS Theatre’s drama The Children’s Hour is playing this weekend! Performances are on 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Tickets are on sale this week during lunch at the financial office and are $5 with your student ID. Come and see this awesome show!STUDENT STARTS LACROSSE TEAMJake Trapp has undertaken creating a lacrosse team here at CHS as his Senior Project. The first meeting was held last month to see what interest there was among the student body and more than 40 guys showed up wanting to play.The team will be part of a league out of Reno where they will play some teams of which are sanctioned by the high schools, while others, like the Carson High team are not supported. With that said, the new lacrosse team is in need of equipment (such as lacrosse sticks) or money to buy goal posts.If you can help out with these needs, please contact Jake at jtrapp5190@yahoo.com. Jake is looking into expanding his project to develop a girls’ lacrosse team also.WRESTLING SENIOR NIGHTThe CHS Wrestling Senior Night will be sponsored by Sierra Surgery Hospital. The seniors on the CHS wrestling team will be honored at their final home match on Thursday in Morse Burley Gym when they take on regional power Spanish Springs. Sierra Surgery Hospital is the sponsor of the event that kicks of at 5 p.m. with junior varsity matches with the varsity dual to follow. Come out and support the Senator wrestlers!SENIOR SPOTLIGHTCHS is proud to spotlight Nicholas Forbes. He maintains a weighted grade-point average of 3.7. Nick’s plans include attending the University of Utah to study computer science with a minor in business.He is active in the Skills USA Program at the high school as well as the Boy Scouts of America. Nick is a member of the CHS National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. He also participates on the varsity tennis team.Recently, as a member of Mrs. Golik’s Honors Government class, Nick’s team, Unit 6, won the top award for that unit among the eight other Northern Nevada schools. He enjoys freestyle skiing, music and spending time with friends and family.
