John McKinney founded Nevada Distribution Services in a small 25,000-square-foot warehouse on Brierley Way in Sparks in February of 2002.

Just over a decade later, McKinney is eagerly awaiting another move, this time into 188,000-square-feet of Class-A distribution space on Waltham Way at Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.

Nevada Distribution Services serves as a general commodities warehouse for a wide range of clients. It’s that varied product line that has led to the company’s growth in recent years.

“We cover a broad spectrum of products, from cosmetics to latex gloves,” McKinney says.

NDS currently occupies 129,000 square feet on Purina Way. In mid-2012 NDS, was bursting at the seams, and McKinney added secondary warehouse space, a small

25,000-square-foot storage building nearby on Kleppe Lane. In just eight months, though, NDS again needed more warehousing space.

The company’s new distribution building on Waltham is scalable to 400,000 square feet. NDS receives products from locations around the world, McKinney says, and it ships to destinations in many different countries using all modes of transportation — air, water and ground.

NDS needed just 14 months after its founding to grow into the Purina Way location — but business wasn’t always as brisk.

McKinney didn’t have a single customer when he opened his doors on 2/2/2002. Volleyball manufacturer Tachikara was among his first clients as NDS was given a contract to inflate the volleyballs and house them in cardboard display boxes for retail sale.

“We were blessed and very lucky with some very supportive companies,” McKinney says. “Now, we have got a good selection of customers that are growing. The company has done a tremendous job, and we have got a great group of employees.”

Nevada Distribution Services currently employs 44, but McKinney expects to nearly double the size of his workforce by the end of the year once the move to TRIC is complete and NDS can handle a larger volume of work. He expects the company to be moved to Tahoe Reno Industrial by August.

“What we have needed is space, and we now have more,” McKinney says.“We have managed our growth through hard work and determination,” McKinney adds. “It’s pretty simple; this is not rocket science.”
