Carson City’s Parks and Recreation Department is beginning and ending July with trail work days and discounted Mills Park minitrain rides.

Carson City is joining the National Parks and Recreation Association in celebrating this month as Parks and Recreation Month. The department’s calendar of events includes many free and some discounted activities. Director Roger Moellendorf said he was pleased with the national designation and city participation, but joked it didn’t go far enough.

“Instead of Parks and Recreation month,” he said, “it should be the Parks and Recreation millennium.”

The first events on this month’s calendar are today and include a trail work day, a carnival at Mills Park and the reduced-price Mills Park minitrain rides, which are every Wednesday but July 24. The cost goes down from $2.50 to $1 if riders mention Parks and Recreation on those three Wednesdays.

The carnival continues on Independence Day and both Friday and Saturday. Fireworks also are set for Thursday. For more information, including ticket prices, people should contact the Retired Senior Volunteer Program at 775-687-4680 or Moellendorf’s department at 775-887-2262. That department’s number is 775-887-2290, and it can offer information on all monthly events.

Among those events are Sunday Swim days at the Aquatic Facility, 841 N. Roop St.

On July 7, 14 and 28, the cost is $4 for adults and $3 for seniors or children ages 4-17; on Sunday, July 21, people may swim by donating a can of food for Friends In Service Helping.

Trail work days are not only today and on July 31, but also July 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 24, 26 and 28.

On Tuesday, June 16, there is a V&T Trail Bike Ride, and another called the Riverview Park ride is on Tuesday, June 30; bikes are available for each if needed.

Among a host of other events are free classes: a Zumba class at the Community Center on July 8; fitness aerobics there July 10; a yoga class at Sunset Park on July 22, and tai chi training in Mills Park on July 24.
