Virginia City explosion: At 11 o’clock on Sunday the brick building at the corner of B and Taylor streets exploded. General Van Bokkelen was the local agent of several powder companies and had been making a series of experiments with several explosives. He had stored under his bedroom and office six cases of nitroglycerine and about 100 pounds of giant powder ... The loss was about $225,000. Many died in the explosion ... Major General Jacob L. Gov. Richard Bryan announced that Nevada has applied for more than $1 million in federal funds to convert the Stewart Indian School into state offices and college classrooms. The money will be matched with state funds to repair and remodel various buildings.
