Fundraiser for cancer research Saturday at Carson High School

Organizers are optimistic that the approaching Relay for Life of Carson City will be a success.

“We’re doing great,” said Melissa Reed-Olszewski, community relationship member. “We’re beating our numbers from last year. We’re going into it on a high note.”

Twenty-seven teams and 257 participants have raised more than $29,000 so far. Reed-Olszewski said the local event has a goal of $55,000, which will be donated to the American Cancer Society for cancer research.

The overnight community fundraising walk runs from 4 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday at Carson High School, where teams will camp out and members will take turns walking around the track.

Food, games and other activities, including live bands and an all-night disc jockey, will keep the crowd entertained.

Individuals and teams still can sign up to participate, and those not participating can attend.

While it’s fun, Reed-Olszewski said, it’s also a reminder of the sanctity of life.

The events begins with a survivors lap, where cancer survivors walk the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants.

This year, it will be led by Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell.

Once the sun sets, there will be a lap lit by luminaries to pay tribute to all who have been affected by cancer, including those currently battling the disease, those who have died and the caregivers.

“It’s a good way to celebrate life,” Reed-Olszewski said. “To honor survivors and to recognize those who we’ve lost to cancer.”
