Kyburz fire is 95% contained

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Firefighters hope to have the Kyburz fire in Eldorado National Forest fully contained this evening.

The size of the fire, which has destroyed two outbuildings, was estimated at 615 acres. Firefighters had it 95 percent contained Wednesday evening.

Firefighters started rehabilitation work Thursday, in addition to securing the perimeter and extinguishing hot spots. They brought in a specialist to assess the damage and determine how to prevent soil erosion and restore the condition of roads and trails, said U.S. Forest Service public information officer Jean Hawthorne.

“We’ve had good weather to assist us, and the added air resources really helped us,” she said.

U.S. Highway 50 in El Dorado County was open Thursday night; Granite Springs and Webber Mill roads remained closed. All campgrounds are open.

The fire is in the national forest on the north side of Highway 50, west of South Lake Tahoe.
