Free pool admission Sunday in exchange for canned food

With temperatures forecasted to reach the upper 90s this weekend, the Carson Aquatic Facility is offering some cool relief.

As part of its Swimming with FISH promotion, pool fees will be waived Sunday in exchange for a can of food, which will be donated to Friends in Service Helping.

“It’s a pretty good deal,” said Kurt Meyer, the recreation manager in charge of the aquatic center. “And we’re supposed to have a pretty warm Sunday.”

Meyer said the pool has been closed on Sundays for the past few years because of budget cuts. However, this summer Sunday hours have been restored.

The Sunday schedule is the same as Saturdays, with lap swim from 9:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and open swim 12:30-4:30 p.m.

Meyer said he is trying to get the word out to let patrons know about the extended hours.

“It’s going,” he said. “It’s trending. People are starting to hear about it. I think it’s getting more popular every Sunday.”

He said the Swim with Fish event will be a good way to promote the pool, while also helping a local cause.

FISH provides a free dining room, along with clothing, showers, laundry, medical services and shelters for those in need.

Meyer said he hopes swimmers will come out for Sunday’s food drive, then continue to come back.

“Ultimately, in the heat of summer, we want to be able to offer our beautiful facility to people all week,” he said. “Come down and use the pool.”
