DMV sets workshop on authorization cards for undocumented drivers

The Department of Motor Vehicles is hosting an Aug. 7 workshop to help iron out the regulations for the new Driver Authorization Cards.

Legislation was passed in the 2012 session and signed by Gov. Brian Sandoval allowing undocumented residents who cannot qualify for a regular driver’s license to get a driving privilege card.

DMV Director Troy Dillard said based on experiences in other states — such as Utah — that will reduce the number of uninsured motorists on Nevada’s roads and improve safety by making sure those drivers are trained in the Nevada traffic rules.

Lawmakers estimated during hearings that up to 60,000 people will apply for the cards.

The workshop will deal with such issues as what documents DMV will accept to issue a card.

The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. in Legislative Hearing Room 4100.

It will be video-conferenced to both the Sawyer Building in Las Vegas and Elko’s Great Basin College.
