Senator Square: A look back — and ahead — for Carson High School

This is the last article for the school year from Carson High School. I will return with this column in August at the start of the school year.

Please note the information at the end of this column regarding next year. I would like to give special thanks to the staff and administration for providing me with updates throughout this school year that have made writing this column possible.

STUDENTS TO CHINA

This summer, 10 students from CHS are embarking on the learning experience of a lifetime. These students will be heading from the “Biggest Little City” to the biggest, most-populated country ... China.

This adventure takes students to Beijing, Xi’an, Yangshuo and Shanghai over an 11-day itinerary, filled with the wonders of China. Participants include Andrew Cooper, Eli Everest, Kiara Riske, Lydia Lopez, Morgan Barton, Cameron Sievers, Marielle Samii, Adam Daniels (EVMS student), Colleen Sievers (adventurous mom) and Nicole Fagundes (CHS teacher).

Extending the classroom to a foreign country is the ultimate education, and CHS students will have an opportunity to visit Italy with Ms. Fagundes over spring break of 2014. If you are interested in this 2014 Italian experience, please contact Nicole Fagundes at nfagundes@carson.k12.nv.us.

SENIOR EARNS AWARD

Mikayla Story was awarded the Reviglio Way to Go Award by Dan Gustin Sports Productions and Reviglio Family. The recipients are nominated for their academics, community involvement and athletics. Mikayla Story was written up in the Edible Reno Tahoe Magazine (March Issue).

Mr. and Mrs. Gustin saw her article and called CHS to see if she would be a good candidate for this award. Both Mr. Bateman and Kathy Taylor agreed that she was very deserving of this award and nominated her. Mikayla received the Reviglio Award on May 2 at a luncheon sponsored by the Reviglio Family at the Boys and Girls Club in Reno.

Dan Gustin Productions came to CHS and interviewed Mikayla about her 4-H and FFA involvement along with her community service, academics and athletics. Way to Go Mikayla!

CHEER SQUAD WINS NATIONALS

CHS students Kylie Schmid, Alexis Lequerica and Amber Seifert just returned from the American Cheer Power National Competition in Las Vegas where they performed in the Senior Level I category doing tumbling, stunting and choreographed routines as part of the Sierra Adrenaline Cheer Squad coached by CHS cheer coach Marissa Beck.

The girls brought home the National Championship! Congratulations to these students. Look for these girls next year on the sidelines of CHS sports, as they also are members of the 2013 cheer squad for CHS.

HOSA ELECTS OFFICERS

HOSA (Future Health Professionals) is honored to have inducted the elected officers for the 2013-2014 school year. The following students were elected by our 150 members. Reporters: Elsa Maples and Selena Martinez; Historian: Ana Casa; Treasurer: Tony Xie; Secretary: Nimra Torres-Perez; Co-Vice Presidents: Tony Cacioppo and Bethany Kniffen; President: Michael Leiken. The outgoing 2012-13 officers would like to wish them the best of luck and enjoy the hard work during the upcoming year.

TEACHERS OF MONTH

Penny Reynolds, culinary teacher, was recognized as May’s Teacher of the Month. Dana Fleming, theater teacher, was recognized as June’s Teacher of the Month.

2013-14 INFORMATION

Sports physicals

Fall sport signups will be from 5-7 p.m. July 30. Physicals will be offered for $10 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Those who cannot make the sign-up can turn in their completed sport packet to the athletic office between 8 a.m. and noon July 31-Aug. 12. Students may not try out without an approved sports packet from the athletic department. Coaches will receive the approved packet prior to tryout.

Packets are available at www.carsonhigh.com, under the “Athletics” tab. The athletic office will be closed July. For more information, contact the Aathletic office at 283-1900.

Freshman orientation

Freshmen orientation for the Class of 2017 will be at 8 a.m. Aug. 13 in the gym, followed by the Freshmen Senator Luau at 7 p.m. at the football field entrance for $4 entry.

School start date

School starts Aug. 19.

A1/B2 — 7:45-9:15 a.m.

Nutrition break — 9:15-9:25 a.m.

A3/B4 — 9:25-10:55 a.m.

Lunch — 10:55-11:30 a.m.

A5/B6 — 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

AB55 — 1:07-2:02 p.m.
