Malkiat Dhami, a Carson City-based hotelier, and Walt Owens, with Owens Precision Inc. in Carson City and Mound House, have been chosen to fill positions on the Carson City Planning Commission.
Dhami, who already had served on the commission in recent years, will serve another term, and Owens will be serving his first on the body that makes planning or zoning-related decisions and recommendations.
Dhami, a Sikh with roots in India, has hotels and motels locally and in other Northern Nevada cities. He is building an 83-room Candlewood Suites lodging property in Winnemucca as the economic recovery picks up steam and that city in north central Nevada benefits from mining operations nearby.
Owens, who grew up in Carson City and is a longtime resident, serves as president and general manager of the firm that bears his name. It provides quality contract services in machining technology for manufacturers and other firms in the medical, electronics, aerospace and defense industries.
The board selected Dhami and Owens on Thursday night after interviews with six candidates.
The seven-member commission approves use permits and variances. It also makes recommendations to the city’s governing board on subdivisions, property rezoning, master plan amendments and street abandonments.
