Duncan Golf Management of Reno, expanding its portfolio of owned and managed courses in the region, has completed the first phase of its project to renovate the Fallon Golf Course.
The company took over management of the course this spring after it was acquired by the government of Churchill County. The county paid $695,000 to acquire the course from Churchill County Course LLC. State records show the managing members of that company are Gary Canepa of Reno, Brian Belanger of Winnemucca and Calvin Moffitt of Fallon.
Duncan Golf Management also owns Wolf Run Golf Club in south Reno and Dayton Valley Golf Club in Lyon County. It manages Tahoe City Golf Course, which is owned by Tahoe City Public Utility District.
Scott Wackowski, director of operations for the company, said the company spent the last couple of months reseeding thin spots in fairways and improving the greens of the nine-hole course.
The 118-acre course along the banks of the Carson River northwest of Fallon is surrounded by cottonwood and willow trees. The course was opened in 1958 as So-Par-O-Van Golf Course.
“It’s starting to look like a golf course,” said Wackowski.
Duncan Golf Management also has added 20 carts with GPS functionality, expanded the restaurant at Fallon Golf Course and hired a new chef to improve its menu. Marketing efforts for the renovated course include cross-promotional offers between the four courses that Duncan Golf Management oversees in the region.
As they voted to purchase the course, Churchill County commissioners said last winter they view the property as an important community asset, particularly as Fallon and Churchilll County work to increase tourism. The county’s purchase also includes 131 acre-free of underground water rights and 15 acre-feet of surface rights.
