Silver State Stars take free live theater to seven elementary schools in region

Silver State High School’s performing arts group, The Silver State Stars, is in the midst of its second Theater to the Schools project.Last year, the group traveled to seven area elementary schools to perform “Wolfy’s Side,” a play written by student Grant Davis that told young viewers it is OK to be different and that they should stand up for themselves.This year, the group of six students and drama teacher Abbey Gardner are presenting Edith Weiss’ “Cinderella Cinderella.” The play is set in an English village in 1342. Cinderella, a plain-looking girl with big feet, has to compete with her two mean-spirited but stunningly gorgeous stepsisters for the hand of the kind and sincere prince.The Silver State Stars will perform for seven schools again this year: CC Meneley, Carson Montessori, St. Teresa, Gardnerville Elementary, Capital Christian, Jacks Valley and Hugh Gallagher.Gardner said she wants to give children the experience of live theater, for free.“There’s nothing better than seeing a child’s eyes light up as the world of the play unfolds before them,” she said.The arts can be transfomative, Gardner added.“Theater has made such a huge impact on my life and who I am, and has been very important in many people’s lives that I know,” she said. “Live theater can teach inspiration, emotion, creativity, excitement, thought, sensitivity, passion, teamwork, intelligence, focus and responsibility. I am so happy that we are able to do this project.”
