Senator Square: Carson High presents ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

“Feed Me, Seymour!” the iconic, avocado-shaped, eyeless plant lovingly named the Audrey II bellows as our main character stands, bewildered. “Twoey — you TALKED!” Seymour Krelbourn (Challen Wright) is a hapless fellow working in a run-down flower shop on dreary Skid Row owned by Mr. Mushnik (Henry Wilson). One extraordinary day following an unexpected total eclipse of the sun, Seymour purchases a strange and unusual plant and decides to name it after his coworker Audrey (Hannah Hartman), the bleach-blond secret love of his life.While caring for the Audrey II (Vocals by Mike Irvin, Puppeteering by Amanda Ramsey, Claire Hachenberger, Jesse Toral and Kaeli Biggin), Seymour discovers the plant’s unique appetite. The plant grows and grows as does Seymour’s affection for Audrey, but who will get her first? Don’t miss out on the chance to see this hilarious, quirky musical, “Little Shop of Horrors,” put on by the talented actors, singers, musicians, and technicians at CHS. From the antics of a crazy dentist (Ivan Gates) to the rocking harmonies of three street urchins who narrate our tale (Stephanie Gansberg, Shaylee Nystrom, and Summer Barth), this is one show you do not want to miss!All performances will take place in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center. The show opens 7 p.m. Friday. Additional performances include 7 p.m. Saturday and March 20, 22 and 23. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee March 23. Tickets are available at the door. Cost is $10 for general admission, and $5 for high school students with ID. SKILLS STUDENTSOFF TO STATELast weekend was Regional Skills USA Competition for Northern Nevada. CHS students represented the areas of welding, auto technology and culinary arts. Many students placed in these events. In welding, there were 28 contestants and only 11 qualified for state. Garrett Griffitts of CHS was one of the lucky 11. In auto tech, there were 39 students from seven high schools. Eleven will go on to the State Automotive Contest. CHS student Levi Carter placed sixth after the hands-on tasks and will compete at stateIn culinary arts, 34 students from 12 high schools competed. All four CHS culinary students qualified for the next competition. Nguyen Phan took second. Genoa Donaldson took third, Andrea Davis took fourth and Samantha Whiles qualified. State Skills will be held in Reno on April 24-26.CHS CHOIR STUDENTS ALL-STATE HONORSCongratulations to CHS students selected for the 2012-13 Nevada Music Educator’s Association All-State High School Honor Choir! Bass II: Ivan Gates and Mike Irvin.DEBATE RESULTSCHS wrapped up the regular season with a tournament at Elko High School this weekend where 15 students competed and several performed very well.Andrew Updegrove placed sixth in novice congress. This is his second tournament in a row placing in congress. Andrew also placed sixth in novice impromptu speaking.Porfirio Jauregui also broke into finals in novice impromptu and placed second overall. Luke Szatmary competed in senior events, which is the equivalent of varsity and placed fifth overall. Jacob Bertocchi had the best tournament, sweeping his events. He took first in novice impromptu, first in novice Lincoln Douglas debate, going undefeated and earning first place overall for speaker points.Carson High earned third place overall in the Northern Nevada Forensic League in Lincoln Douglas and second place overall in impromptu speaking. Next week, Carson travels to Las Vegas for the state competition.SENIOR PROJECTPAPERS DUEThe senior project committee held a research paper workshop on Thursday, and the second committee reading for passing papers will be Wednesday after school. Papers must be electronically submitted before that time using turnitin.com.SENIOR PROJECTTORAISE MONEY FOR FOOD FOR THOUGHTSenior Marisa Landry, who is a third year culinary student at CHS, is going to host a casual “tastings” night for ladies on Saturday, with a variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts. There will be three demonstrations by Chef Marisa on how to create a tasty meal in a matter of minutes.The evening is a donation-based event so please bring your cash or checks. All proceeds will be donated to the local nonprofit charity Food for Thought that benefits the hungry children in Carson City. In appreciation for attendance to this event, one will receive all of the recipes from the food demonstrated throughout the evening. The suggested donation for this event is $10, but the guest list is limited to 40 people. If you would like to help Marisa raise money for this cause and attend the Ladies Night Tasting, please contact Kristin Robinson at 775-848-7282.STUDENT TESTIFIES AT LEGISLATURESenior student Daniela Carrillo has been working with Assemblyman Randy Kirner from Washoe County for her senior project. She decided to follow the state legislative process because she loves the government process and she understands the decisions that the legislature make affects every citizen in Nevada.In particular, Daniela is monitoring bills relating to the millennium scholarship. She recently testified in front of Assembly’s education committee members on the importance of the Millennium Scholarship.She also had to conduct a mini survey with senior students to gather some research on the issue of cheating and whether or not students should be allowed to receive the scholarship if they have a record of cheating in high school. She will present her results to the committee soon. We are proud of Daniela and her representation of CHS at the Nevada Assembly. FOOD DONATIONS THANKSCarson High School would like to thank the AT&T Pioneers for their generous donations of healthy snacks to our school. The AT&T Pioneers have been donating to Carson High School for many years and are greatly appreciated. SENIOR SPOTLIGHTThis week’s spotlighted senior is Hannah Fasiang.As a member of honors government, her class competed in the district We the People competition where her unit team captured first place. She has a weighted grade-point average of 4.93.Hannah spends a large amount of her time volunteering in the community as a candy striper at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, and has been job shadowing an orthopedic surgeon for the last two years. She enjoys telemark skiing, hiking, mountain biking, backcountry skiing, and white water rafting, and is a member of the CHS Honor Society. Hannah also serves her community as a member of the National Ski Patrol. In the fall, Hannah will be attending Westminster University in Salt Lake City Utah, where she will double major in neuroscience and business. They have offered her a scholarship of $80,000. Hannah plans to become an orthopedic surgeon and work in third world countries helping those who couldn’t otherwise afford medical care.CHS is proud of all Hannah has done, and we wish her success! • Angila Golik is a government and sociology teacher at Carson High School and a member of Senator Pride.
