Carson City’s Fire Department ambulance service and the library building roof won priority ranking over some other capital needs from the Board of Supervisors on Thursday.
Finance Director Nick Providenti told board members that his projections narrow the prospective city government general fund capital budget for fiscal year 2013-14 to about $350,000. Earlier, City Manager Larry Werner and Providenti had hoped for more from general revenues.
“It just means,” Werner said, “that we don’t have any excess funds.” Providenti explained.
Both they and supervisors talked hopefully of economic recovery bringing in more, but staff was looking for direction based on current projections.
The board adopted a motion prioritizing $100,000 toward eventual purchase of a new ambulance costing $275,000 while doing the library roof soon at about $115,000.
The rest of the estimate in general fund capital money, or $135,000, was to be used across city government on what Werner called a “break/fix” basis during the coming fiscal year.
Earlier, the board heard a report from Carson City Health and Human Services Director Marena Works on public health in which she said life expectancy here is 74.3 for males, 80 for females.
Other reports, she said, show U.S. life expectancy is nearly 78.5 and Nevada’s is 77.6, meaning the state ranks 36th in the nation.
