Spring break approaching for Carson High

STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT

Only four more school days to go, and it is spring break 2013! As we get closer to the end of the year, everyone is getting anxious about the upcoming months.

Class elections are campaigning this week. The class of 2014, 2015 and 2016 are running for the offices of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and class representative.

Voting will be taking place online Wednesday and Thursday. Students can vote at www.voting4schools.com.

UNIFORM PARENT MEETING

A second meeting will be 6-7 p.m. Wednesday in Senator Square for parents to voice their questions, comments and suggestions for the proposed Standard Student Attire for the school year of 2013-2014 for CHS.

MEMORIAL RUN

The second annual Stephen & Keegan 5k/10k Memorial Walk/Run will be April 13 at High Sierra Brewery.

You can register for this event by calling Kaia F.I.T. at 841-4962 or online at www.active.com. All funds raised benefit the Carson High Athletic Fund to purchase spirit packs for those in need including equipment and physicals. A T-shirt is included with your paid registration fee.

NHS ANNOUNCEMENTS

National Honor Society has a multitude of service opportunities available for its members coming up in April.

Meet in back room of Q’s BBQ to help stuff, label and prepare SafeGrad mailing for all the seniors at 6 p.m. April 8.

The school is holding a meeting for parents of MASH students and needs your help with babysitting 6-8 p.m. April 10.

Consider being an ESL tutor. Time commitment is one or two hours a week after school in the library. Finally, we are collecting care packages for Operation Gratitude. See monthly letter for specific suggestions.

And don’t forget, we are holding elections for officer’s positions in April. Applications are due by March 27. For more information, contact the NHS advisor Elena Glenn at eglenn@carson.k12.nv.us.

CAREER DAY PICNIC

The Carson City Republican Women will be holding a career day picnic at the end of April for all high school students in the area in grades 10-12.

Professionals from various career fields will be on hand to give brief presentations about their work and then answer questions. The event will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 26 at Silver State Charter School but it is open to CHS students as well.

DEBATE RESULTS

The Carson High debate team traveled to Las Vegas to compete at the state tournament. Porfirio Jauregui advanced into super congress for the house, only 25 students in the state advanced to super congress in the house.

A special thanks to the following individuals and businesses who sponsored the team for this tournament: John Harmer, attorney at law; Wayne Chimarusti, attorney at law; Downtown Coin; Greener World Recycling; and Noel Waters.

The debate team also competed in the Rotary Competition. Congratulations to Luke Szatmary and Jauregui who advanced to compete at the area competition in April.

CHEER TRYOUTS

Carson High School will conduct cheer tryouts for the 2013-2014 school year 3-4:30 p.m. April 9 in Senator Square. Sport packets are available online at www.carsonhigh.com under the “Athletics” tab.

A current physical must be provided with the packet for all incoming freshmen. Packets are due to the athletic office at Carson High School, located in the main entrance no later than 3 p.m. April 8.

The athletic office will be closed for spring break. Drops-offs will not be accepted. There will be a mandatory parent meeting 6:30 p.m. April 8 in the Carson High School library.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s Senior Spotlight is Kylee Johnson, an athletic and academically focused National Honor Society student that is helping make a difference at Carson High School.

Kylee is very busy maintaining a 4.5 grade-point av­erage taking mostly advanced-placement courses. She has been accepted to Bates College and will major in biology or English.

Kylee has enjoyed participating in soccer, basketball and ski during her high school career. Kylee is concerned about environmental issues and is currently a member of the Environmental Club that promotes recycling at CHS.

We are proud of Kylee’s contributions to the Carson High School community, and we wish her the best success in the future.

Angila Golik is a government and sociology teacher at Carson High School and is also a member of Senator Pride.
