Carson High School students out on spring break

Besides teaching and writing this column, I have the fortunate honor of advising a couple of clubs at CHS. One of these clubs is the recently formed Gay-Straight Alliance, which was started by Frankie Esquer, senior at CHS.

This past week, we were honored guests of Assemblyman Andrew Martin at the Nevada Legislature during Equality Day. Nine seniors from the GSA Club were introduced and recognized on the floor of the Assembly. I was proud of the students and their courageous representation of the CHS GSA chapter.

It was an incredible day of acceptance and we thank Assemblyman Martin for including us in the occasion.

STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT

It is Spring Break 2013 here at Carson High! While you are out soaking up some sun and relaxing, don’t forget to come support our athletes that are competing this week.

On Thursday, come out and cheer on our varsity baseball team as they take on Reed High School at home at 3:45 p.m.

This weekend, our track team heads out to Rocklyn, Calif., for the Thunder Invitational Meet. Good luck to all of our racers, throwers and jumpers!

SENIOR PROJECT FUNDRAISER

Abby LaFoon, a senior at CHS has chosen to raise money for breast cancer as her senior project. Abby has put together the “Step Toward a Cure.”

Bring a donation, and a symbolic pair of shoes (new or used) to hang for hope. Shoes will be hung on a fence as a symbolic statement of the trials of those who face breast cancer; knowing they do not walk alone in their battles.

The shoes will be donated to the cancer center in Carson City.

The event will be 1-5 p.m. April 6 in the north parking lot of the high school. If you have any questions, or would like to donate, please contact Abby at 775-291-0882.

NEVADA BOYS AND GIRLS STATE

Calling all motivated juniors: Nevada Boys and Girls State programs are great ways to learn more about our government and meet some of the top students from around the state.

Boys State will take place at UNR the week of June 16-22. Girls State will be at Lake Tahoe from June 30-July 6.

HOSA COMPETES AT STATE

A big congratulations to the 20 HOSA students who competed in the state competition. Abigail Hersey received the silver award for Outstanding HOSA Chapter.

Tony Cacioppo was awarded the Outstanding Chapter Member. Mariana Yanez, Teresa Soto, Yvette Torres and Itzel Salizar took fifth for their Health Science Presentation.

Jasmine Reynolds took fourth in Job Seeking Skills. Vanessa Rauch took fourth in Pharmacology. In Fire Science, Nicholas Greene brought home the silver, and Michael Leikin the gold.

HOSA President Shannon Flaherty also brought home gold in Veterinary Science. Congratulations to all who competed. We are proud to have had you represent Carson High School.

FORMER CHS GRAD WINS

Tracy Morris, who graduated from CHS in 2009, graduated from Johnson and Wales University in February. Tracy has been the pastry chef on the University’s competitive team.

She competed in the American Culinary Federation competition two weeks ago where she and her team won the Northeast Regional Championship Culinary Competition. They are now heading to the National Championship in Las Vegas in July.

LINK CREW APPLICATIONS DUE

Attention current sophomores and juniors. Remember your freshman year when at orientation with your Link Leader you dressed up for a tour of the school? Do you want to be that leader for the incoming freshman class?

Link Crew Applications are now available in Ms. Tartan’s room (223) and are due by April 17.

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

There will be a five versus five basketball tournament on April 15-18. This double-elimination tournament is similar to the dodgeball and volleyball tournaments that were earlier this year. Pick up the forms outside of the leadership room after break.

INVISIBLE CHILDREN TO RETURN TO CHS

Invisible Children will be coming to CHS on April 23 to do a screening of their current film.

“From the very beginning we’ve been storytellers and visionaries aiming to inspire hope and action in our generation. Each film aims to introduce the audience to the complexities of the LRA conflict in Africa, highlight the human resilience that transcends borders, and inspire immediate action.”

This will be the third year that Invisible Children has come to C­­­HS. The focus of this visit is to catch people up on everything that happened in the last year.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week Carson High School is proud to spotlight Odile Reid.

Odile is very busy maintaining a 4.3 grade-point average while taking advanced-placement and honors courses. Odile is involved in Leadership at Carson High School and is student body secretary. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.

After graduation, she plans on attending the University of Nevada, Reno to study science and attain a career in the medical field. She plans to go into the medical field and has a strong interest in neuroscience. We are proud of Odile’s contributions to the Carson High School community and we wish her the best success in the future.
