A 65-year-old Silver City man was arrested Tuesday after two suspicious packages were left at the Department of Motor Vehicles building, resulting in closures of streets and state buildings including the Capitol.

The Nevada Highway Patrol was called to the DMV/Department of Public Safety building at 555 Wright Way at 3:41 p.m. Carson City fire personnel were handling a medical call there when they saw a white male with two packages creating a commotion, according to the Highway Patrol.

Also according to the NHP:

When the man left the building, he left the bags behind. Carson fire personnel inspected them and smelled an unknown odor, then moved the bags outside.

The building was evacuated as Carson City Sheriff’s personnel searched for the man; deputies found him at Stewart and Carson streets shortly thereafter. The parking lots also were evacuated, and the Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad determined that the packages contained only paper and miscellaneous items.

Charles Leigh Self was arrested on charges of having an outstanding warrant out of Reno for failure to maintain proof of insurance and multiple traffic violations. He was transported to the Carson City Jail for booking.

Self is a person of interest in the incident pending further investigation.

The case is under investigation; anyone with information is asked to contact the Nevada Highway Patrol at 775-689-2500 and reference NHP #130506323 or the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at 775-887-2020 and reference CCSO #156.
