Silver State spikers qualify for national event

Silver State Volleyball Club’s 17-year-old Black squad won five matches last weekend at the Power League tournament at the Reno Convention Center to qualify for the upcoming Junior Olympic National Tournament.

The local squad, seeded ninth, opened the tournament with wins over squads from Sacramento, Marysville and Stockton. On Sunday, the team won two more matches against California teams to advance to nationals.

Members of the team are Dayton’s Madi Foley, Mary Scholz of Fallon, Brook Mattice of Fernley, Mo Malutoga and Madison Funk of Reed, Casey Kline, Kourtney Sidner and Brooke Larson of Galena, Ysabelle Leron of Bishop Manogue, Lauren Williams from Damonte Ranch and McQueen’s Kiana Krom.

Only four previous Silver State teams have qualified for the year-end tournament in the past 30 years. The team is coached by former Carson coach Justin Malley.

GOLF CLINIC SET

FOR EAGLE VALLEY

The 21st annual Fred Alexander Memorial Family Golf Clinic is scheduled for Sunday at 10:30 a.m. with registration and concludes at 4 p.m. at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

The clinic is free. Each participant will receive a backpack filled with golf goodies, a CII calculator and T-shirt. There is a raffle, free snack lunch and a free (fitted) golf club limited to the first 500 participants.

The clinic, which is sponsored by The Sierra Nevada Chapter of PGA Professionals, the NCPGA, Play Golf America, Eagle Valley Golf Course, Carson City Municipal Golf Corp. and Calculated Industries, will consist of exhibitions from area professionals. Peter Johncke, a trick-shot artist, will also give demonstration.

SEAR, GASKILL WIN

AT THUNDER CANYON

Steve Sear and John Gaskill shot a 95 to win the Thunder Canyon Cha-Cha Shamble on May 3.

Ken Hoppe and Larry Easterling were second at 100, while the teams of Burt Clements and Butch Cattanach are at 102 along with Jack Bonar and Dave Waldron.

Claudia Goodnight and Karon Sullivan won for the women with an 86. Virginia Bonar and Kathy Archer, and Lynn Greenman and Monica Pike shot 93s.

Terry Gilmartin and JoAnn Sheerin won closest-to-the-hole honors.

• In the Beat the Pro event on May 10, Dave La Fata, club pro, and Ryan Zaccaro, golf shop manager, shot a 69.

The teams of Sue Camp and Kathy Cockerill shot 60, Kathy Archer and Tina Hughes shot 62 and Claudia Goodnight and Shirley Westfall shot 64. Charlie Cockerill and Dave Westfall shot 64, Saul Singer and Vern Hamilton shot 66 as did Mike McGee and Mike Bennert, and Dave Waldron and John Lukens.

Singer and Christy Atencio were closest to the hole winners.

COUPLES LEAGUE STARTING

AT CARSON VALLEY

Starting May 24, a Couples League will start at Carson Valley Golf Club.

Golf starts at 5:15. The cost is $30 which includes nine holes of golf, cart and dinner after golf.

A Couples Clinic starts at 5:15 p.m. today and the cost is $20 per couple.

• Bruce Sanford, Gary Carsten, Charles Poe and Roger Hala shot a 130 to win the CVGC Cha-Cha-Cha event on May 11. Marc Prause, Daryle Lewis, John Guidicatti and Bill Allen were second at 134, and the team of Mike Davis, John Carey and Gerry Bing were third at 135.

Bill Center was closes to the flag on No. 18.

SAWYER WINS AT

EMPIRE RANCH

Tom Sawyer shot a 59 to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event on May 8. Charles Bell was second at 60 and Adolf Zertuchi was third at 61.

Paul Lockwood won Flight B with a 61 followed by Hans Ehrlin at 63 and Chris Nenzel at 65.

Sawyer, Roger Maxwell and Charles Bell were closest to the hole.
