Nonstop train: Charley Flanders of Empire was badly hurt by jumping off the passenger train and had to call on Dr. Waters. Flanders had come up from San Francisco to Carson and decided to go onto Empire, paying 50 cents for the extra ride. As they were nearing the Empire station, the train wouldn’t stop for him, but would slow down so he could jump off. When he jumped, he stepped on some trestle work, and down he went. This is one of the instances of worse-than-folly of attempting to get off a moving train — and the case in point that illustrates the inexcusableness of a conductor’s ever-failing to stop the cars to let a passenger off at his destination.
