Shaw Engineering has expanded into new services.
The Reno-based civil engineering firm known for expertise in water systems has added geotechnical services and materials testing to its list of services. Earlier this year the company hired Dennis Keely, longtime geotechnical engineer with Earth Science Consultants Associated, after the Reno/Sparks consultant with whom Shaw routinely worked decided to close up its shop and lab. Working with Keely since May is Scott Mathot, geotechnical staff engineer and recent graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno.
So far, Shaw’s geotechnical services are being used in-house on three projects: a visitor’s center under construction in Austin, a sewer pipeline for the wastewater treatment facility in Herlong, Calif., and a water pipeline in Tonopah. The pipeline, originally constructed during the silver rush at the start of the last century, has been replaced piecemeal over the years.
“It’s all old equipment and we’re putting in a completely new pipeline,” says Mathot.
That includes investigating the bedrock, much of which needs to be blasted. Other geotechnical services include foundation engineering, inspections and materials testing.
Shaw soon hopes to branch out and provide its geotechnical services to other engineering firms.
“Shaw has been known for quality work in civil engineering for over 30 years,” says Mathot. “We are working on expanding our name recognition in the community.”
