Some little-know contributors to the Reno-area economy will be among the companies recognized during the second annual Existing Awards on Thursday.
The event sponsored by the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada runs from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the Tuscany Ballroom of the Peppermill Resort Spa.
Nancy McCormick, vice president of retention and expansion for EDAWN, said 59 companies were nominated, nearly double the number of nominees from last year.
The nominated companies generate more than 50 percent of their business from outside the region and bring wealth to northern Nevada.
Companies from Washoe County, Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and Fernley are among the nominees.
“Other events celebrate those companies that have chosen to re-locate to Northern Nevada, however this event is designed to thank and recognize all those great companies, small and large, who are the foundation of the local economy, the primary employers in the region.” McCormick said. “Many of these companies fly under the radar screen, and many people may not even know who they are. This event will put a spotlight on the diversity of business that exists right here.”
Awards categories include areas such as capital investment and expansion, sustainable operations and local sourcing. A new category, “The Biggest Little Wow,” includes 15 nominees in innovative businesses. Most categories will include winners among small firms as well as large companies.
